^now that you break it down, it kinda makes sense. thanks.

there are some 3D DVD and Blu-Ray releases (includes glasses), like Coraline. How does that work? From what you are saying, I am guessing that it does not look as good as it did in the theaters.

It is a big budget action action movie. The dialogue is going to be a little cheesy and a little bland. The characters are going to be a little one dimensional and stereotypical etc.

This movie needs to be compared to similar movies. The Dark Knight, Transformers, other Cameron movies.

When we look at it in that context I don't see how this won't look like the greatest movie ever compared to most action movies.

Edit: Lets assume we only compare this movie with its peer group, ie other Cameron movies and other recent action films.

So the top grossing action movies of 2008 were:

1. The Dark Knight
2. Iron Man
3. Indiana Jones
4. Hancock
5. Quantum of Solace
6. The Incredible Hulk
7. Wanted
8. The Mummy

Other than TDK, and as a stretch Iron Man and Hulk, I can officially say unequivocally that Avatar is 100x better than any of the movies on that list. #s 3, 4, 7 and 8 were some of the stupidest movies I've ever seen. Ever.

James Bond was mediocre but I'd say that it still isn't half as good as Avatar is reported to be.

Let's look at the last 10 years.

1. TDK
2. Pirates of the Caribbean 3
3. Spiderman
4. Transformers 2
5. Revenge of the Sith
6. Return of the King
7. Spiderman 2
8. Two Towers

Ok this list is a little bit harder to crack. Here, based solely on current Avatar reviews, the only movies that it is obviously better than are Pirates 3, Transformers 2 and probably Revenge of the Sith.

The other ones are going to be hard to beat but still possible. Well IMO the Two Towers is the best movie on that list and Avatar is going to have to be Best Picture worthy to beat it which is unlikely. Other than that though I don't see how the possibility that Avatar is mediocre compared the rest of those movies.

Furthermore, lets look at the top grossing movies of all time.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...fore_inflation

I count at least 10 movies on that list that plain sucked. Harry Potter 1 and 2, Star Wars: Episode I, Spiderman 3, Pirates 2 and 3, Transformers, Crystal Skull, Matrix 2 and 3, War of the Worlds, 2012.

I also see a few movies that Avatar could be as mediocre as (talking purely story here, special effects will obviously be killer): Independence Day, Harry Potter 3, 4 and 5, Jurassic Park 2 etc.

Then there are the 10 or so movies that, for their genre, were excellent: Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Pirates 1, Casino Royale, Titanic, TDK, Two Towers, both Spiderman movies etc.

Obviously not everyone will agree with my assessment of the mediocre vs the excellent but I think we can all agree on the terrible ones or at least mostly agree.

Based on the movies I listed, and the reviews that we have so far for Avatar, I don't see how anyone could possibly say the characters or story look less inspired, original or well thought out than most of the excellent movies I listed. Again, there will be a few that stand out, for example IMO Star Wars and the Two Towers are by far the best movies of the ones I mentioned.

Then we look at other Cameron movies.

True Lies - Great action, WAY far fetched, bad acting but overall fun and original

Terminator 2 - Ok flawless, still mediocre acting but IMO the best action movie ever.

Titanic - Some great acting, some mediocre acting, mostly great but some weak and lame dialogue/story. Overall a fantastic movie though

Terminator - I've never thought that it was that great. Pretty meh all around except for being so groundbreaking

Aliens - I loved it but not everyone agrees. again a little weak on the story/dialogue/characters and heavy on the action but I loved it.

Therefore, based on what we are comparing it to I say Avatar looks like a winner. Want to compare it to Best Picture winners and such and of course it looks pretty lame but so does the original Star Wars and other of the all time great action films.
Special thanks for the effort alone. I do agree you need to compare movies witin their type. I hate it when they compare an action adventure to a chick flick. dumb.

They're anaglyphs (what you call colour splitting). It's obvious why this format is not as good, in real life you're not used to seeing blue through one eye and red through the other.

It is really too bad that the huge storm in the eastern US limited the opening weekend of AVATAR to $73 million.

Hopefully for those who enjoyed the movie, and for James Cameron and Co., the movie has a long run and the limits to its opening weekend in the eastern US don't affect its ultimate run at the box office much. It had a huge opening weekend abroad though and sits at an estimated $230 million total for opening weekend worldwide.

For those who don't know, James Cameron has sequels planned out for AVATAR and will make them as long as AVATAR does well.

He has 2 sequels laid out.

Going to the movie in a few hours. Surprised it only made $73M, seems extremely low as far as expectations go. Maybe everyone was out shopping?

*Deep Breath*

I am kind of sick of arguing with you.

That said, I am very sad about the situation on the eastern seaboard of the US right now. The people who died, their families and the people who are struggling with the huge blizzard.

This thread is not about that though and I was discussing the effect that the blizzards there have had on the topic of THIS THREAD.

Do you understand now?

No kidding. There are stories on the AP wire discussing how this movie's opening is expected to suffer because of the weather out east. If you are going to be overly dramatic, CMPunk, why don't you fire them a letter of complaint?

I drove for 3 hours through that blizzard yesterday to see Avatar on an IMAX screen and it was completely worth it (normally would have been an hour drive at most). Effects aside, it was a well above average movie. In IMAX 3-D, it was easily the best movie going experience of my life. I couldn't wipe the grin off my face for half the movie.

Why is it too bad that the opening weekend has been stunted. Who cares?

Well I doubt it will come to this but AVATAR needs to do well in order for the sequels to be made. If the "stunting" of the opening weekend is enough to limit its total box office earnings then it could affect whether or not we get to see more of Pandora.

I personally would love to see the two sequels James Cameron has planned.

But again, most likely AVATAR will make enough money to avoid any questions as to whether it warrants sequels.

Avatar one will make $300M domestic, then Avatar 2 will have some crazy villain and will make $2B.

$300 million domestic sounds like a safe bet. I think that if word-of-mouth extends its run it could get a little higher. Based on its early international numbers though, I think it could make ~$600-700 million worldwide.

AVATAR made more internationally this weekend ($159 million) than Star Trek made in its entire run ($127 million).

I just got back from the movie, and I truly enjoyed every minute of it. What an experience. Cameron's attention to detail was remarkable.

I'm not gonna rehash everything that's been said and people here don't seem to agree with my taste in movies anyways, so I'm not gonna bother.

9/10.......now if I saw this in IMAX, it might be higher....im going to imax next week. it was sold out today....all four imax showing today were sold out as of 1130 this morning.

Saw it last night (Imax)

A real treat, very good story line..incredible special effects. James Cameron= Genius
Apparently he was to release "Avatar" after titanic, but he felt that special effects needed to catch up to his vision.

The story line was "i thought" really good
Imperialisim vs Biodiversity theme

I could see Avatar having an incredible run a la Titanic. I believe Titanic opened the same weekend as a Bond movie (Dec 19th or so) and at first didn't really dominate.

Only after word of mouth did the movie really make a lot of $$.

Also, because of the limited numbers of 3D theaters it'll be a while before Avatar makes a huge amount. Although the lack of 3D theaters will also likely prevent Avatar of getting close to Titanic numbers.
