I think most of us would at least wrestle with the thought of helping your family members in a similar situation. But, their help ultimately helped contribute to giving Jenkins the opportunity to kill himself. Is that better than life in prison in the US (assuming a guilty plea/verdit)? I don't know, but that's a pretty heavy burden to carry around.
Regardless, what his family did was illegal. They knew it and they did it anyways. I think harboring a known fugitive shouldn't go unpunished, regardless of the relationship.

I would help my sister. No doubts.
Obviously I would try and talk sense into her. But a large factor here is that there is no way I could imagine she would murder someone, and I am sure his family was the same way.

Yes to get him a lawyer and turn themselves IN without violence.

It is possible the family helped Jenkins hole up in an out of the way hotel for a couple days to calm down while they plan their next step. Perhaps, with an international manhunt going on, they needed to hide him for a couple of days while they consulted counsel or tried to talk him in to turning himself in.
Who knows if Jenkins planned on killing himself at that motel or if the family were aware of that possibility.

if people are smart they can say that - he was staying in the hotel while his attorney was on his way to pick him up so he can turn him in.

With our family the first question is, is there a reward, the second question is can you make that check out to cash.
We'd turn each other in for a $5.00 reward and a gift certificate to HMV.

Every member of every family should be forced to watch a few episodes of "Lockdown" so they can see the homicidal lunatics they'd have to hang out with in the joint.
That should cure them of any notion they want to risk jail time just to help a family member on the lamb.

If he denied the murder or claimed it to be a terrible accident and expressed fears of the American legal system I could see the family helping him hold up until they could explored a legal defense. Perhaps they felt that a Canadian rich white boy might not get a fair hearing in the US or maybe they wanted the promise of no death penalty on paper. Perhaps they wanted to negotiate a surrender under the condition that their son would do his time in a Canadian prison; Who knows?

The fact that no charges have yet been laid is interesting. The police have known who this girl has been since he was found dead. That's been over 3 days now. The delay is probably in interjurisdictional wrangling on both sides of the border.

If history is any indication, an upper-class rich caucasian will get the fairest and easiest trial in the American justice system. They already promised they wouldn't give him the death penalty, and he wasn't even confirmed to be a murderer yet.
He would have gotten an easy sentence compared to, say, a Latino-American gang member who pulled the same act and isn't a TV star, but I digress...

That has less to do with his class and ethnicity and more to do with the fact that California doesn't execute alot of people.
Infact, only 13 have been executed since 1976. I doubt Jenkins would have qualified under that kind of criteria.

Your probably right but, that wouldn't change the family's fears. Also I think the fact he was a Canadian would work against in an American court.

Umm, they sure helped him out nicely didn't they? He's a corpse...
I wouldn't assist his escape, why? Because who this day and age can escape something like this? something as high profile as this? There's basically a negative chance.
To help him, they should've helped the authorities.

Same with my family. They'd turn me in, then take photos of the cops taking me down so they could send the pics to family overseas.
Then my parents would ask for a couple of minutes alone in a room with me so they could beat the crap out of me.

Basically even if I didn't commit any crime, the cops could come into a room with my parents and sisters and ask them what they would do for a klondike bar? Not only would they turn me in, but they would manufacture evidence, and break my hand so that the glove fits.

That's true... although California has the most number of prisoners on death row... they just don't execute as quickly/often as Texas or Florida because of the extensive appeals process.
Who knows what the family's rational was or what their lawyers may have had cooking regarding Jenkins eventually turning himself in. Regardless, they should be charged. I don't buy them keeping him on the lamb long enough for his lawyers to work out an agreement being an excuse for their actions. It's a reason, but the consequences should still follow.
