I am going to fill the Innovator category, with Appollodorus of Damascus.

Born in Damascus in 98 AD, gained fame as an architect throughout the Roman Empire, then executed 125 by Hadrian.

Some of the famous works of art/construction that he is credited with:

Trajan's column and market

Ulpian basilica(rebuilt one)

Turnu Severin bridge (Trajan's bridge)

Some of the buidings he is also connected with with no definite proof of his authorship:

The Pantheon in Rome

Villa Adriana in Tivoli

The reason I choose to put him in this category is that some of the things he created were abosolutely innovative. For example the bridge that he built in Dacia (now Romania) was the first bridge built over the Danube, an incredible feat at the time. Also it stood as the longest arched bridge for 1000 years.

I select in the Scientist category:

Niels Henrik David Bohr (Danish pronunciation: [nels ˈb̥oɐ̯ˀ]; 7 October 1885 – 18 November 1962) was a Danishphysicist who made fundamental contributions to understanding atomic structure and quantum mechanics, for which he received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1922. Bohr mentored and collaborated with many of the top physicists of the century at his institute in Copenhagen. He was also part of the team of physicists working on the Manhattan Project. Bohr married Margrethe Nørlund in 1912, and one of their sons, Aage Niels Bohr, grew up to be an important physicist who in 1975 also received the Nobel prize. Bohr has been described as one of the most influential physicists of the 20th century.[1]

In the category of Explorer team Historyectomy is proud to select John Colter.

A member of the Corps of Discovery, Colter is widely recognized as the first 'mountain man' and is the first known white man to explore the Yellowstone Basin and the Teton Mountains. He was instrumental in securing safe passage for the Corps through the Rocky Mountains.

Dude was crazy, and did some wild stuff...Indian fighting and such. He spent a tremendous amount of time alone in the wilderness, and probably smelled fairly badly.

He is famous for Colter's Run which you can read about at the above link.

The picture below, is Colter's Stone...which was found in a Western Idaho field in the 1930's. That would've been a pretty awesome thing to stumble across

When you think about pirates, you think about a lot of the famous 16th and 17th century Caribbean pirates, but obviously pirating has been around for pretty much the entirety of naval history, but they were little more than nuisances. But this pirate pretty much set the model for generations of pirates: a man who was feared in every European port from Greece to Spain and was similarly hailed as a hero in the turkish ports; who built himself an armada of ships that rivaled that of legitimate navies; who took over a large city and declared himself ruler; who responded to the loss of a limb by having a replacement made out of silver; and who's death gave no relief to his enemies when his brother took up his name and continued to build on his legacy.

In the outlaws category, Strange Things Afoot at the Circle K selects Barbarossa.

Oruc Reis, aka Barbarossa, was a famed and feared pirate of the mediterranian. The son of a Turkish potter, Barbarossa was one of four brothers who worked as a privateer for the Turks, working to counteract the privateering of the Knights of St John in the late 15th century. Originally, they used their father's trading boat for their privateering work, but he was captured and spent three years in the Knight's fortress at Rhodes. Eventually, his younger brother, Hizir, conducted a daring rescue to free him. Over the next ten years, he built up a pirate armada of about 30 ships; some acquired through privateering arrangements with Ottoman politicians, some acquired through victories at sea. He became a notorious threat to European interests throughout the mediterranian, raiding the coasts of Italy, Sicily and Spain repeatedly. He also conducted missions to transport moors from Spain to North Africa. These moors referred to Reis as Baba (Papa) Reis, which sounded to European ears like Barbarossa (redbeard), and he did have a red beard, so the name stuck. In 1511, he lost much of his left arm, but was undeterred; he got himself a silver prosthetic, and within a year, he and his brothers launched their most successful campaign yet, capturing 23 ships from Genoa in less than a month. During these years, Barbarossa developed his home base in Tunisia into a sophisticated maritime port, with some of the most skilled shipbuilders in the mediterranian, as well as a gunpowder production facility.
When Algiers was taken over by the Spaniards, the Reis brothers were asked by the Ottomans to intervene, but not only did they oust the Spaniards, but Reis declared himself Sultan of Algiers. He proceeded to expand his territory throughout North Africa, and defended it against the Spanish. Eventually, he was defeated in a battle at the inland city of Tlemcen, but not before he and 5000 moors defended the city against nearly 20,000 Spaniards and Bedouins for 20 days.

The legacy of Barbarossa would not end there: the younger brother Hizir took up the name of Barbarossa, and retook the city of Tlemcen. The transition was seamless enough that many Europeans did not even realize the first Barbarossa had been killed. (Sort of like the Dread Pirate Roberts.) He secured Ottoman interests in North Africa, and helped defeat the Knights of St John at Rhodes in 1523, where 20 years earlier he had rescued his brother. While Oruc had always had a bit more of an independent streak, Hizir was happy to be a legitimate officer of the Ottoman empire (though he remained governor of Algiers), where he rose to be one of the most senior navel commanders, at his height commanding more than 250 ships and 30,000 soldiers. The Pope organized The Holy League to fight him, consisting of the combined forces of Spain, The Holy Roman Empire, Venice, and the Knights of Malta, but even this force he defeated. Eventually, he would retire in 1545, leaving his son as his successor in Algiers, and a ottoman influence in the region that continues to this day.

I'm going to take one of the most evil men to ever live, Adolf Hitler. There's no denying two things. First off, he caused some absolutely heinous things to occur...probably some of the most horrific ever. Secondly, he did a great job of leading his people. They would follow him to the ends of the earth. Just look at what he had many people convinced to do...people who were just normal human beings. Anyways, he'll be my political leader for now.

Wikipedia

There's a tonne of stuff out there about the guy, so just look for yourself if you really want to.

Jim Garrison's Briefs Selects: Rosa Parks (1913-2005) in the Women Category

Rosa Parks was an icon of the Civil Rights Movement in the United States. Her refusal to give up her seat on a Montgomery city bus was not the first of such actions, but had the most effect as it led to the Montgomery bus boycott.

Ms. Parks was honored with many awards and designations in her time on earth, but also felt a bit overwhelmed over time by the fame/notoriety brought to her life.

Per Wiki:
Quote:
Parks eventually received many honors ranging from the 1979 Spingarn Medal to the Congressional Gold Medal, a posthumous statue in the United States Capitol's National Statuary Hall. Her death in 2005 was a major story in the United States' leading newspapers. She was granted the posthumous honor of lying in honor at the Capitol Rotunda.

Time to make some moves, as there's a crowd in the political/military leader categories.

First, HeroQuest moves Genghis Khan to Eastern category (Mongol generals were so important in creating the Mongol tactics and strategy that it's hard to know what exactly was his contribution as a military leader anyway).

Second, HeroQuest picks Napoleon I of France, better known as Napoleon Bonaparte (1769 – 1821) in the Military Leader category.

He is one of the few "total" military leaders. He personally handled both grand and operational strategies as well as the politics, economics and logistics, creating smaller or larger revolutions in all parts of warfare (although often making good use of already existing ideas).

I might expand on this a little later. But propably Napoleons most lasting, important and positive legacies, one of which he was reportedly most proud of, is one of the most influential documents in history.

Napoleon was instrumental in coming up with and putting to effect the first succesful codification of law. But of course he did not actually write it. He found a good lawyer to do it.

Third: In the Innovator/Humanitarian category, HeroQuest picks Jean Jacques Régis de Cambacérès (1753–1824), the main author of the Napoleonic Code.

If you don't know what that is, you should read about it, since it's "one of the few documents which have influenced the whole world."[1]

He was a pretty moderate man, mostly known for his legal work (and his homosexuality), so for example reading through his Wikipedia article doesn't take long. I think these days we could use a little of this kind of ideological approach to law: understandable and for the general good, made by professionals. There can be upsides to dictatorships.

In the Innovator/Humanitarian category I pick Jackie Robinson.

I'm not the world's biggest baseball fan, but his story has always struck me as one of the craziest things. My dad was alive when Jackie made his debut in major league baseball. This blatant "you can't play because you are black" thing they had going on is only one generation removed from me and it's almost difficult to believe. It was only 62 years ago.

Anyway, enough of my nonsense. Here's a little info about the guy...

He was a poor kid who kicked ass at sports, which is a real surprise to everyone I'm sure. He played both catcher and shortstop on the high school baseball team, which must have taken remarkable speed and stamina.

His brother won a silver medal at the Olympics in 1936, likely pissing Hitler off even more.

He went to UCLA and was primarily a football player. He later joined the Army after Pearl Harbor and got dicked around because he was black. Apparently Joe Louis had something to do with him eventually getting into officer training. He was eventually honorably discharged, even though he went through some crazy military hassle because he wouldn't, literally, move to the back of a bus.

Yada yada yada. We all know the story. He was a cool dude. We're all sports fans too and we all know what a farce professional sports would be if they had any sort of ridiculous arrangement like he faced.

HeroQuest picks Albert Einstein in the Inventor / Scientist category in the eight round. I believe he is still available.

Not only is Einstein synonymous with genius all over the world, he pretty much set the standard for the visual image of a mad scientist.

Our roster so far:
- Political Leader: Gandhi (1st)
- Soldier: Simo Häyhä (2nd)
- Thinker / Philosopher: David Hume (3rd)
- Eastern: Genghis Khan (4th)
- Visual artist: Stanley Kubrick (5th)
- Military Leader: Napoleon I (6th)
- Innovator/Humanitarian: Cambacérès (7th)
- Inventor / Scientist: Albert Einstein (8th)

My previous post has two picks, partly because they are very much connected.
