Oh my god, what a great thread. I don't come on for a few days and this is what I missed. Reading everyone's post all I had was a smile on my face the whole time.
I grew up in the Hood in Dover. Anyone from there? I used to hang out at the Red Rooster on 26th Ave S.E. Bought all my hockey cards there, and pumped quaters into the Super Mario bros machine. That game had quaters lined up like crazy back in the day.
I lived in Glenbrooke at one point too, and where Westhills is now, I used to ride my bike there and catch gophers and tadpoles. That was the edge of the city.
I used to fished the video games at Easy Street. Anyone know how to do that? Haha.. tie a quarter to a piece of thread and unlimited credits if you had skill. They even knew I was doing it there and they ended up hiring me. I worked at Easy Street.. whoo hoo! That place was wicked. Pretty fun place to work at for $4.20/hr. At least I made great tips. I co-ordinated birthdays. I probably did one your guys birthdays there if you are 5-10 years younger than me. Jim Peplinksi tipped me well once. I made a lot friends working there that I still hang out with.
I once won a Buckshot t-shirt and C.O.P. day passes. I sent in the funny joke of the day. I remember it vividly too. I ran home everyday for lunch from school after I had sent that letter. Then one day, that owl puppet thing (I can't remember his name), hands him a letter, and it looked like mine. I was so sure, because of where I put the stamp and the colors I used on the envelope. Then he announced my name and read my joke. "What happens when 2 shirt collars race? It ends up in a tie!" he read 2 other jokes, and everyone voted mine as the best!! Good times!
My sister and I also auditioned for Easy Street, but never made it. Might have been a good thing though, because I would have punched Kevin Frank. He was an idiot.

Ahh Dover. I grew up there till the end of grade Seven.
Back before it was like it is today. Going to Westdover elementry school.
Walking to Red Rooster. going to the irrigation ditch and exploring all around that area.
walking to school without worrying walking and biking for miles around dover with out a single worry.

Moved to Calgary when I was 7 from Regina (Back in '91).
We bought a house in Deer River Estates (just off of Deer Run), and I remember coming down Canyon Meadows and looking out at the ridge and there not being a single house for miles.
Now Douglasdale and MacKenzie dominate that landscape.
Lots of other little things too .. mainly overpasses on McLeod, no CTRAIN at Canyon Meadows, Bankers Hall twin tower, and Lloyds rollerskating rink (don't know if its still there).

Ahh Lloyds rolleskating rink - went there for a number of Safety patrol get togethers. Also represented St. Williams school as a safety patrol in the Stampede Parade when I was in Grade 6.
They still have safety patrols??? Looking back - having Grade 5 and 6 students direct the other kids across the street probably wasn't the best plan in the world

I remember those days! I was a patroller as well during my time at St. Gregory school. Do you remember the annual picnic at Heritage Park?
I believe they still do have school patrols. I remember getting graded out of 110 points. When our team received 110/110, the Constable and mascot came to the school and threw us a pizza party.

In about 1969, there was only one great place to eat in Chinatown. I can't remember the name, but it was on the east side of Centre Street, just north of 3rd Avenue. You had to go up this long flight of stairs to the 2nd floor, and it had big white, hard wooden booths. ...he took me to the back of the restaurant (there was no others in the restaurant at the time) and introduced me to Dustin Hoffman and his wife. He was in town making the movie, "Little Big Man". I recall him being very outgoing, happy and friendly, a lot like his character in "the Fokkers". Naturally, I went down and got the others to meet him.
|
Wow you're an oldtimer That place you're talking about is now called the U&Me Restaurant, it's STILL the best place to eat in Chinatown, best dimsum in the city.
______________
As for me I'm a youngin'...here's my list:
-I remember cops use to ride horses around downtown
-I grew up in Woodbine, Anderson road ended at 24 St SW and the reserves were right behind 24th
-Southcentre's Famous Players was the theatre I frequent most
-Zarley Zalapski was once my favorite Flame, right up there with Trevor Kidd
-I remember riding my bike down Anderson Road all the way from Woodbine to Southcentre when I was 14, something I wouldn't do now if you paid me $1000.
-I banked with Canada Trust, not TD
-Home Food Inn on Bonaventure Dr. was actually good
-Signal Hill was not an upscale residential area
-There was a Cineplex Drive-in somewhere but I forgot where...
-Market Mall was a dump
-So was Chinook Centre
Well that's all I can think of for now...

Perhaps this is the best thread to ask this question...
When I'm driving in to work, I see something that looks like a drive-in screen. It would be in the NE, between Barlow and 36th, just south of 16th. I see it when I have come off 16th(westbound) and waiting for the light to turn so I can go south on 36th.
It looks like an old screen that is still sitting there. I never remember to actually drive by and take a look, I only ever seem to think of it when I am looking at it (besides now). Is it an old screen, or just something that looks like one?
|
I thin you're probably seeing the site of the old Sundance Drive In. One of two old drive-ins Calgary had. The other being the Coral 4 out east on 17th Ave (which also still has two screens up).
Ahhh. How I miss them both. Saw a double feature there of Silverado and Runaway (with Tom Sellek). That was the first of many good memories at the drive in.
Editing this because I didn't read the address correctly. I am not sure about that particular address. Are you talking about the hotel on the corner? Or ?...
I will leave my other post intact
This post was about Memorial Drive and Barlow Trail. end of edit;
No this was the Corral Drive-in before it became four drive-ins on 17th beside the blow up place? on 60 somethingth st .17 Ave SE
Ate lots of ...,,... popcorn there. hmm
Jiri you are thinking of the Sunset just off Edmonton Trail ,down from Centre St..
38th Ave?
It is where the huge Centre Street Church is now.
In my opinion ,one of the most undervalued industrial zones in N America.

I haven't read the whole thread but the one Calgary memory that I miss probably more than anything else is The Republik. I saw so many amazing bands there for cheap, it was a sad day when that venue closed.
|
That, my friend is one of the greatest travesties of the Calgary club scene. 25 cent hiballs fed my craving on many a Thursday, and there was nothing like getting up on stage grooving to a little NIN.
One of my fondest memories: I saw my first girl/girl makeout there, and took one of 'em home (she was Swedish, let me tell ya holy moly).
The last night it was open was pretty funny, all the old school punk rockers that used to go there in the late 80/s early nineties crawled out of the woodwork, put on their Dead Kennedies t-shirts and combat boots, and tore the place apart. It was kinda funny watching the expressions on all these young kids that had no idea what the place was all about and the clientel it had when it first got going.
Even better was the fact that my first vomit at a nightclub was at the Rupublik when it was on 9th Avenue where The original Ol' Spagetti Factory used to be. Pavement playing the Republik is still one of the best concerts I have seen....

Anyone go to a burger joint called Fuddruckers on McLeod?# I think it turned into Jack Astor's or something.# Used to have awesoem burgers.
|
Yeah I worked there when it closed. Fun place for sure.
|
Best thing about Fuddruckers...writing your name down and waiting.....
"IP Freely, your burger is ready". Ensuing cackles from high school students as they went to retrieve their food.
One other burger place I do remember was Bob's burgers. And working in Chi Chi's kitchen for a couple of months. I was fired because I failed to show up for a shift cos' there was this party I really wanted to go to....
My god, whatever happened to that spirit?
|
Believe it or not there is still a Bob's in Calgary. It is out on the far end of Glenmore Trail - in the mini-mall next to The Glenmore Inn. So if you have a hankering for a Bob's Burger there ya go!
That and a thousand bucks for plane fare and I'm in!

Yeah I used to live near one in Whitehorn. Took my bmx there all the time jumping off the sidewalk where it got high (i was a kid) at one end. Big wooden circle outside of it to climb on and have your candy in etc.
I remember the northhill cinema too it was awsome as well as the other big one downtown, wasn't it on 1st street? Then there was that kinda bizzare one at the top of Bankers Hall, which was actually pretty convenient.
Forgot i probably answered this earlier in the thread, thought it was a new one!

Who remembers the capture of notorious serial killer Charles Ng just outside the Bay downtown? Huge news when they realized who they had caught. And, he was living in Fish Creek Park, near the edge that runs along Parkland.
And a long shot here. Anyone remember a store called Caprice Distributors? I can't remember the name of the street it was on. If your parents were bargain hunters, they may have been there. My dad used to own it. Its gone now, but it was around for the better part of a decade.

I do remember that old diner in Market Mall. Me and my Brother used to always our parents to get us Malts right as we walked out of the Bay into the Mall...
Ahhh the good old days, if I remember correctly didn't Market Mall have a massive fountain/sitting area that you could sit on and eat your lunch or whatever, it was a pretty long fountain.
