$47 million? Damn the Marlins almost won the World Series last year with total payroll less than half that. Very bad management. Toronto has no business giving out contracts worth $130 million to guys like Vernon Wells it's only a slight production dropoff to get a journeyman for less than $6 million a season. Until they rethink their entire franchise building strategy and realize that the only way to be successful consistently is building through the draft and complementing a successful young core team is by signing cheap free agents, and only when necessary, the Toronto Blue Jays are destined to finish no higher than third in their division.

The Marlins didn't even make the playoffs last year...

Look at more than the stats! They were the hottest team down the stretch and boast the best young rotation in the league.

How can you almost win the WS and not even make the playoffs?
You can't, it isn't possible.
They were pretty good down the stretch, but they finished with a record of 78-84. They were 10 games out of the Wildcard race, 4th place in their division and 19 games back of the Mets for the division lead.

Does that mean that the Avalanche "almost" won the Stanley Cup this year?

Shea....Shea Hillendbrand is that you?
Wow, Roy, are you some jilted ex-Jays player or something? Yeesh. I can understand complaining/not liking JP/etc.....but at times you seem to be going a bit over the top with the dramatics!

Huh I didnt realize Billy Beane had been the Oakland GM for 15 years already...
You know Roy, it's a lot different to compete when youre sitting in the AL west. The Mariners, Angels and the freakin' Rangers. Total combined World Series = 1. Wow. Not to mention the numerous World Series Championship teams Billy's built since he got there...it's gotta be pushing...zero.
As for the theory that if he had an unlimited payroll, it would be "scary". Ask Glen Sather how that worked out for him.

I think he threw too many innings trying to save the bullpen in his last few wins. What a disaster.

Listen you don't have to throw stats at me...I might be the biggest A's fan on the board. The fact is Beane has great regular season success but very limited playoff success. Am I proud A's fan knowing they compete against the big spenders absolutely but I also know that if Beane could have signed another big bat or 2 over the past x amount of years, the A's might have actually won a world series.

Oh wow. Are you kidding me? What a nightmare season.
The Jays are rightfully getting a lot of criticism for covering up these injuries too.
EDIT: According to BJW its appendicitis. Talk about bad luck. What the hell did the Jays do to piss of the baseball gods?

###.
There were a couple years where the Jays were better than any team in the AL West, but only finished 3rd in the AL East.
As far as Halladay goes, oy... What a season.

Troy Glaus just left tonights game with what looks to be a hamstring/calf or possibly a reaggravation of his heel injury. Jason Smith replaces him.
This is turning out to be one hell of a bizarre season.
