Personally, I love it. You can go out to the bar, come home, and not smell like smoke. As someone who does enjoy a smoke every now and then (particularly when drinking), I think it's great having to go outside. If you're at one of the louder bars/clubs, it gives you and your ears a bit of a rest, and gives you some fresh air.
So, smokers? How has the adjustment been?

i'm not a smoker but i've got mixed feelings about the whole thing. the whole healthier lungs thing is great but.... some bars smell far better when all you can smell is smoke.

Cecil not quite what it used to be for you???
I love it - all my favorite places to hang out - now I can go with my girlfriend (she is allergic to smoke) and we can enjoy it together.
Flames Central would have been NASTY if they had smoking in there - I remember how bad the Palace used to be...

haven't been to the cecil yet since the smoking ban has been brought in but i can imagine... we're going there in a couple weeks for a buddy's birthday so i hope its not TOO bad.
some of the lower end places smelled like death for a while... but even nice places like the underground were awful right after the smoking ban was started. thank god they did renovations and its all better again.

I've spent more in bars this year than in the last 3 put together. The smoking ban has meant a lot more money from me.

I don't go to bars anymore. Not that I went a lot before, but I'd probaby end up in a bar once a month before. Now, I just don't go. I'm not much of a smoker normally ... occasional cigars only. But when I'm in a bar I want to smoke, and if I can't have a puff with my pint, I might as well stay home, which is what I do.

I smoke. I like not being able to smoke in bars. I feel so much better when i leave and hangovers seem to be less bad as well. I stopped smoking in my condo around the same time too.
The bull and finch across the street you can still smoke in so I go there every once and awhile.

Does anyone know how the law applies to patios? I haven't hit any up yet, just wondering if smoking is OK as long as it is outside?
I hope not.

Funny enough, Calgary had a law for NO SMOKING on patios BEFORE they outlawed indoor smoking...
So if you want to smoke, you step outside the gate around the patio and then light up.

Not a smoker, and never have been. I remember when Edmonton implemented the smoking ban - it took effect on July 1. Calgary's smoking ban took place on Jan. 1. Thus, smokers in Edmonton had about a month and a half to get used to smoking outside before winter, whereas Calgary smokers had to step out to light up right in the midst of winter. I think that Edmonton had the right idea in that regard.

I smoked for 23 years (and recently quit), and I fully support this idea.
I don't want my daughters exposed to second-hand smoke (and they never were exposed to it in my house).
I do, however, want the ignorant a$$heads who've never smoked (and make flippant comments) to understand that quitting smoking is NOT an easy venture...it takes more willpower than most non-smokers could ever fathom.
Have some compassion for those of us who made the (bad) decision to start smoking when we were young and have a hard time leaving the habit behind...
It'd be like me asking all you nerds to stop using a computer...cold turkey!

being an ex-smoker has really made me realize what everyone complained about when I was smoking. I was, however, a considerate smoker, never smoking infront of children (even kids passing by on the street), and would go out of my way to not let it get in anyones face. The only thing I never fully grasped was how bad I actually stunk to non-smokers after just having a butt...
man.. talk about stinky.
I just want to know how the hell they plan to enforce this. Thousands of smokers and you think they're not going to smoke in public? Get real.

It's becoming more of a shunning thing than law enforcement thing IMO. The public is becoming less and less tolerant of smokers...no matter where they smoke. Soon people wont even want to be seen smoking in public for fear for being publicly shunned. Or no..

/\ You're right people look down on smokers more then they use too. When I went to the Killers concert recently there was this stupid little a-hole smoking in the Saddledome a ton of nasty looks later he put it out right away and he was pretty embarassed as well. It's an absolutley disgusting habit and I'm glad that the places I like to hang out are smoke free.

it has been a good thing - I am actually a smoker too - and the ban hasn't been that bad (winter might suck though).
the more strident ban on public spaces, I'll have to check that out as there is a reasonable level of restricting smoking, but there is a point where the legislation might be going too far in the other direction too...
the government can't, nor should it have it both ways; restricting smoking to the point where one can only smoke on thier balcony or property while still gleaning the millions of dollars from it from taxation...

Right, because smokers put absolutely no strain on the health care system.

Like pretty much everyone in this thread I am happy with the smoking ban, much more pleasant experience in the bar all around. Except when you are first walking up the front door and you have to walk through a mob of smokers and their haze. Other than that it gets my thumbs up.
Funny story though. I don't smoke, except outside of the occasional cigar now and then. But near the end of the year, before the smoking ban, me and three or four of my friends at our local pub decided to smoke a couple of the Cuban cigars we bought from our most recent trip down there. So all of us light up and started puffing away. Yeah I know, kind of a a-hole move on our part, but we were drinking pretty good and didn't really care. Anyways half through our cigars, we are making factory level smoke, and this guy at the table besides us looks over at me and puts his fist to his mouth and coughs. One of those exaggerated "I want you to stop smoking" coughs. So I start to feel bad for about 10 seconds, until at which point he pulls out a cigarette and lights one up. The rest of that cigar tasted a lot better after that.

I agree it is kind of hypocritical of the government. But one could argue that by the government taxing it, they are making it more expensive, and in that respect discouraging it even more.

Is it any different then alcohol? The government says where and when you can drink it outside of your property.
Or would you prefer that you could drink anywhere you want including your vehicle?
