Maybe I'm out to lunch on this, but it seems like the winner will have way more total votes against them than for them. Something about that doesn't quite sit right with me.

Because Penner sucked and Rob very much pandered to the NIMBY's in the ward with his messaging. I'm not surprised with the results.

I wasn't particularly gung-ho about any of the alternates, but I'm glad that the vote splitting didn't result in another Gondek term. While a mayor may only hold one vote, they do represent the city and set the tone. Citizens seemed to either hate her, or only voted for her to thwart someone else...that's not a particularly inspiring or beneficial for anyone. For better or worse, it's good that someone else is taking the reins.

Sharpe is a UCP sycophant however, I'm much cooler with Farkas winning despite some question marks than someone who will bend over for the province

I live in ward 11. Kourtney Penner was a disaster. She never did anything, she didn't respond to calls or emails, she didn't represent what the majority of people in her ward wanted and she was smug about it.
It's not surprising she lost so bad.
And people can "NIMBY" all they want about Rob Ward, people in my neighbourhood don't want 8 plexes going up where SFH currently stand, a counsellor has the responsibility to advocate for their ward, she didn't, she got elected last election due to a vote split, and then she ignored her constituents.

Well they better get used to the idea, because a ward that close to downtown will inevitably end up there, unless we shut the doors to the city. And yes, that's exactly what NIMBY is if you aren't closing the doors.

Jamieson in Ward 12 up by 4 votes right now. That’s going to be a crazy race.

I had heard there was a significant downturn in voter turnout but it seems like maybe it wasn't quite as bad. Still clearly an effect from the UCP voter suppression tactics, but also probably something to do with ALCS game 7.
They really need these elections to take place in the summer.

Yeah, some areas make sense for this kind of development and some don’t.

Not your worst idea. We'll abate the housing pressures, growing classroom sizes, traffic woes, and the influx of Leafs/Canucks fans.
You got my vote!

2021 results
https://www.electionscalgary.ca/resu...1-results.html
Farkas wins with 25% fewer votes than he lost with in 2021, and Gondek gets 85% fewer votes this time around. Considering 2021 was right in the pandemic, this years turnout is really sad. With 48% turnout in 2021, if we assume 875,000 eligible, we are looking at 40% turnout. At least it's not as bad as 2004, when fewer than 20% bothered to vote!

I think you can assume closer to a million eligible, no?

I've thought for years Calgary's best days were around 700k-900k. Lots of things to do, easy to get around, and no Pickle Ball. It's all gone to #### after that. Coincidentally, that's also when I arrived. I should have closed the door.

Possibly? I have no idea. OK, I see we added about 180,000 from 2017 to 2021. I didn't want to go with a crazy estimate, so just bumped up a bit from then, but ya, a million seems much closer, so ~35%.

In the vote for Council, there are still a lot of polls to count, but I believe they're mostly the advance polls and mail-in ballots, so there probably won't be that many.
- Nowak (Calgary Party) -- 1.2%
- Wyness * -- 10.8%
- Yule -- 28.7%
- Kelly (Calgary Party) -- 7.8%
- Dhaliwal * -- 17.3%
- Pantazopoulos -- 21.6%
- Atkinson -- 8.0%
- Schmidt -- 6.3%
- Clark -- 2.1%
- Chabot * -- 33.9%
- Ward (Communities First) -- 34.5%
- ---- Tie
- McLean * -- 26.6%
- Johnston -- 13.7%
(Percentage is the current percentage lead over second place, from LiveWire Calgary)
12 is still a toss-up with only 4 votes separating the leaders at this point. Otherwise, 1 and 9 could still change, but the rest look pretty settled.
I don't know enough about most of the candidates to make a judgement call, but the changes in 4 and 7 are certainly welcome.
----------
I live in 9 and voted for Clark. I don't think he'll be a big change from Carra in terms of how he votes. If Gar comes back to win, I wouldn't be too upset with him either.

Imagine if turnout had been more reasonable - the lines were already pretty crazy for most and it was easily the longest I've ever waited to vote.

My right wing buddies hate he has won.
If nothing else, it will be interesting I think.
Is it just one woman on council?

Possibly 2 depending on how Ward 12 plays out.
