I only caught the highlights and watched the third, but I think I'd concur with Armstrong's assessment. Take the bounces and run, but to not call this lucky...we're wearing blinders.
It was lucky.

But where I'd give the Flames props is they kept it to a pretty low event game especially at 5v5. Didn't generate much at all but also didn't give up a ton at 5v5 either. Then just took advantage of some bounces when they did have chances.

Very much Huska hockey in terms of being low event.

Didn't play enough for it to be posted but Lomberg really struggled while the other two were okay. Lomberg sucked the offence out of every line he was on including with Backlund and Coleman who went from 60+ xGF% to in the 30s.

I'd say the Zary-Backlund-Coleman line looks like a keeper. Maybe give Honzek a look with Kirkland and Klapka and put Sharkey with Kadri and Farabee?
How does Backlund keep doing this? The guy just keeps rolling along. I was one of the people saying he should be shifted to the 4th line center role to make room for Zary at centre. I’d still love to see Zary play centre but it was foolish of me to suggest Backlund should play 4th line centre at this point. The guy continues to outplay his opponents when he is on the ice - even when up against top players. Very impressive.

This. Have a full sit down with the league about it. Show multiple videos of it. Make a big deal out of this because it’s ridiculous how often McDavid has done it and gotten away with it. That was an absolutely terrible call. Good on Weegar for barking at the refs over that. Worth the misconduct.

Do it now because it comes from the high ground of winning the game but reflecting on how poorly the reffing was at a critical moment.

And yet… no one cares.

Doesn’t matter how you beat the Oilers.

I am firmly on the opinion that you create your own luck. The Oilers took their foot off the gas and let the Flames back in the game. Got a bs call gifted their way in OT (although the refs missed our slashing on Bouchard) and still couldn't close it. The better goalie won, and the Oilers will continue to have said "gaffes" if they continue to bolster the forward lineup and not the defense or most importantly, goaltending.

For years the Flames lost games they dominated because of bad goaltending. Almost like having a really good goalie is a big part of winning in the NHL. Sucks for the Oilers cuz theirs is horrible. Great win, great effort. Loved the kill at the end of OT without Weegar

The Oilers have a ton of holes in their lineup. Playing McDavid 26 min is the biggest one.

There's no team there. That's going to result in very bad "luck" over a 60 min game.

The better team won.

When the broadcast mentioned he is going to do more PK work I giggled and smiled knowing that he will burn out even faster.

If they're going to play McAvi that much, either his scoring is going to drop off by the playoffs, or he's going to get hurt. A forward can't keep playing those kind of minutes season after season, it wears the body down prematurely.

So Knob’s genius idea for the oilers this year is: “Let’s play McDavid and Draisaitl even more!”

What a genius. No oilers coach has ever thought of that and it always works.

It is also an unnecessary risk. Odds of taking a puck off the foot or ankle is increased on the PK.

How mad oiler fans would be if something like that happened to one of them. They think it’s such a great opportunity to have McDavid and Draisaitl dominate the penalty kill… I’m sure they’ll have some short-handed goals this year but they will also spend huge periods of their already minute-heavy games chasing passes around their own zone.

Good starts for Gridin and Zary, though. Hope that gives them a lot of confidence. I expect Zayne to draw in tonight against a weaker opponent, but I think hiding him against McDrai sends the wrong message anyway.
The Oilers had 2/3 goals on the PP. This wasn't some massive blowout. Yes the Flames got two lucky bounces, but the rest of their game was very solid. The Flames are also missing a top offensive forward (Huberdeau) and have yet to get their PP going, which hopefully Parekh can boost.

Lots to be excited about going forward here. As much as we rag on the Oilers, they are still considered contenders (in fact typically top 2 for best odds to win the Stanley Cup), and the Flames beat them.

One way to look at it - we beat them without playing our best.

This season I'm forcing myself to get up early in the morning and watch the games while I work out - easiest morning to wake up ever.

McDavid is the softest superstar I've ever seen. Just unbelievably ####ing soft.

Which is why I said take the bounces and run.

I just think calling the media bias out for highlighting some good fortune is a bit oversensitive. It was lucky, the Flames worked hard for it, and yes all of that is ok.

Huska is over-thinking his shoot-out choices, based on small sample sizes.

Put out the best proven goal scorers, not Kirkland and Rasmus.
