Markstrom was never my favorite Flame (too many highs/lows and that Oilers playoff series) but I don't understand all the piling on here. He was actually pretty solid in this series behind and undermanned Devils team that limped into the playoffs. He stopped something like 45 straight shots last night so not his fault they lost.

Markstrom about to be 36 years old during next season, and with a 2.50 GAA and .900 sv% in the regular season this year. I notice Jake Allen's 2.58GAA but .908 sv% and wonder if NJ wishes they had just went with Allen this year instead of making the Markstrom trade?

I appreciate Markstrom. He may have been hot and cold during his tenure here, but you could never knock his heart or GAF meter. He signed a fair long term contract and was willing to be moved when the time was right (even if he was a bit disgruntled with the process).
We were able to flip him into two solid pieces for our rebuild/retool.
And best of all he helped ensure that first round pick was a decent one.
He can have a hot year next year now and lead the Devils further in playoffs and earn a retirement contract for all I care. Thanks Marky!

No, the Devils needed both of them.
He was never the same after he got ran into in January and missed time. Before then he was great.
For those who look to the fancy stats, he's at the top for goals saved above expected. That's largely because he was lights out in OT last night. I will concede that the only reason the game went to OT was because he let in some incredibly soft goals in the 2nd period, but that's what you get with Marky. The Devils didn't need a goalie that could steal them games, they only needed league average goaltending, which is not what they were getting in years past.
I think they run with Marky and Allen next season and look to see if Daws or Yegorov are the goalies of the future.

I assume you mean Yegorov, not Sergeev.
Yegorov looks like a good one

I think it's because there's people who will never forgive him for the Oilers series even though that choke job was a team effort. So any chance they get to pile on him they will.

I’d say it’s more how he constantly let in first shot, or else back breaking weak goals at critical times.
One that stands out is how the defence didn’t allow a shot on goal for half a game - and first shot that he eventually faced in that run goes in. People on here were commenting that you have to make a save. Frustrating goalie. Lights out at times… lights out at times lol

People wouldn't pile on him the way they do though if the Flames never choked to the Oilers. He would just be another former Flames goalie.

But he did in an all time worst playoff performance. He can go eff himself and his 1st shot Mark.
I also like how he morphed into a swedish Mike Smith, whining after every goal and glaring at his dmen! hahaha

That has nothing to do with the point I'm making but I'm not shocked you couldn't help yourself to get your fix.

Are they better off with Allen and Bahl, or Markstrom?
They could have REALLY used Bahl against the Canes.

exactly, squeeking into the playoffs with 91 points (lame) and getting pounded in round one is hardly a win. Trading a first and a good young player for that, ouch. If the Flames made a trade like that for a 35 year old people would be losing their ####.

I'll never understand the collective boner for "I'm not signing here" Tkachuk while there's real jilted ex lover energy for seemingly every other flame that's left the team regardless of circumstance. It's a weird dynamic.
The series result sucks for Markstrom but to hang it on him smacks of forced narrative.

Because the Chucky trade landed us Weegs, Hubey, and other assets. Plus Chucky & Co denied the nogoods a cup.
Marky was bad that series but so was the entire team. Our supposed best line in hockey vanished when they were needed most.

Yep, I cheered for him against the Oilers in the finals even though he really didn't do much. But other than than that the guy can go pound sand and I hope that's the only Cup he ever wins.
He had a chance to be the guy after Gaudreau decided to leave and decided he wanted to bolt back to the US too which is his right but he still bailed on the team unlike his brother.
