My 14 year old is going to set up a 3D printing business. He can print stuff for a couple bucks that sells for $25 at the Farmers Market.

The Rocktopus is a big hit.

For young kids and early adults I think its important to keep them busy, doing things that make them feel good about themselves. I realize that money is important, however if they struggle to find work, you might consider having them look for a job as a volunteer. You never know where and what it will lead to. At least he will be associating with some really good types.

My son got a job volunteering at the Foothills Hospital before starting University. It kept him busy, allowed him to practice his people skills, and looks great on a resume. I think it was really good for him and did a lot to help him in his later professional life.

Very good advice.

2 of my interns paused their University educations to work for me and both excelled, worked well, killed it when they went back and the experience led to jobs. I'm hoping this holds true for my current intern.

Not directly related to job recommendations, but I've been kicking around the idea in my head that minimum wage could be set proportionally to experience/education required in the job posting.

Say add 10% to minimum wage for every year of experience / education that is demanded in the add, and required that the ad include what the effective minimum wage for the role is, so neglecting this could be reported.

it would mean minimum wage at $15 for no qualifications, would turn into $16.50 if the employer is asking for a year of experience, $22.50 if the employer is asking for 5 years. $39 if they are asking for 10 years experience and an MBA...

I don't know that it would have a meaningful impact on wages, but it might tamp down on companies making ridiculous demands line 5-10 years of experience for a clerical or otherwise entry level role, and might address the feeling many have that they need a degree just to apply for a job.

The ad for a Senior Manager could easily state the effective minimum wage for the role is $78,000/year based on $39/hour, and still offer much more, as the going market rate for the role. It would just establish a baseline for the kinds of qualifications an employer can request of applicants at certain salary levels. And would hopefully open up pathways for kids to apply to more different jobs

You use unpaid interns?

Why would you come to that conclusion?

Of course I pay them. I even pay pretty well considering their lack of experience.

If you work you get paid.

Because you replied to a post about volunteering.

But you'll notice that I didn't immediately jump all over you. I asked for clarification before reaching for my flamethrower.

So great, internet feud avoided!

Ah! I see the confusion. Fair enough.

No. I pay my employees. Although I did have one guy offer to pay me to employ his kid but...thats not really how it works.

All good sir.

When my kids ask me what they should do when they finish school I'm going to tell them to invest money and retire young.

Genius-level advice, right there.

I think the getting money part to invest comes before the investing money equation.

People can excel in so many different fields.

With the lack in good workers these days, possessing simple qualities will open up a lot of opportunities and help them stand out. Reliability, being coachable, eager to learn, and not being afraid to take on additional responsibility will serve them well. Really at a core level, work-ethic is crucial. If you show up on time, consistently and work hard you will likely stand out. If someone is competent they can do well in most fields. Granted some fields are suited for people with very unique skill sets, like Anaethesiology, or being a pro athlete. But most people that do fairly well in their roles are not that special, they just showed up, worked hard, were open to learning, and learned from their mistakes.
