You don't think Rantanen wasn't trying to take them to the cleaners after what he just saw Draisaitl get?

With him they were a wild card team like Calgary. Why would you pay through the roof for a 29-36 year old?

They got a pretty good stack of stuff for <40 games of Rantanen.

It might to MacKinnon... He's been taking pay cuts on his contacts to keep the team competitive to help win.

If Rantanen wanted much more, I can see that upsetting the apple cart that is the Avs dressing room.

You might be right but man, I just can't see MacKinnon being that guy.

1) no way am I paying him $14M

2) no way am I paying him more than MacKinnon.

Take the trade and move on. Especially since whoever they slot into Rantanen's spot, instantly becomes a much, much better player.

Who are the Avs going to play on MacKinnon's wing? Looking at that roster right now, doesn't look good. Anyone saying Rantanen is going to see a drop in production needs to look at what MacKinnon will be working with....

Am guessing another deal is on its way.

Only guy who's gonna make more than MaK is Makar.

Because Calgary will be paying him 14 in two years.

They have other solid scorers. Not as dynamic but can score.

Valeri Nichushkin is one of them.

If Colorado was such a loaded team with Rantanen then why are they where they are in the standings? Winnipeg and Minnesota? Dallas? Don't talk to me about goaltending when they have worse xGA/60 than Edmonton with their all-world tandem.

Wasted money on Toews, that's for sure. Probably learned from that retirement contract mistake.

Believe Nichushkin is out week-to-week with a lower body injury. After Nichushkin they have...?

Ballsy move by Carolina. I hope it works out for them. Less cowards as GM's would make the NHL more interesting. Colorado...look like cowards

I actually think this is more ballsy for Colorado then it is Carolina.

Trading your cup winning 100 point winger is pretty damn ballsy.

Why do they look like cowards? For getting a veritable haul for 33 games of a star player at age 28? When Landeskog is practicing again?

Drouin looks to have turned the page. Lamdeskog been skating for 3-4 weeks. He might be back. Necas will be there. Lekonen or whatever his name is like a bigger version Coleman. Makar is basically a forward.

The Ava issue isn't scoring before or now, it's depth. I see them adding after this as well too.

Rantanen w/o MacKinnon: 45.8% xGF / 45.9% GF% (989 Minutes)
I posted this in the trade and rumour thread this morning but this is why I'd be a bit worried about giving Rantanen $12M+

Now for Carolina it's a bit less risky because they have a center in Aho, who Rantanen has had some experience with on the international stage for Finland, but you never know.

Who knows maybe it's like Huberdeau and this trade crushes his confidence.

Imagine making $9 million a year and having your confidence crushed over a trade.

You just never know.

I doubt he thought Colorado would be moving him.

Carolina is much more rigid and structured in their system than Colorado is.

And even though Aho is great he's not Mackinnon.

Keeping an unsigned UFA for one last shot in the playoffs and thinking you could sign him as a UFA to me would be ballsy. Trading that player for more pieces and picks seems like a more calculated cautious move.

These bold moves seldom get rewarded in the NHL.

Droiun has turned so many pages at stages of his career, he's got a cramp.

Landeskog was a great player and still might be one. Might. He hasn't played a second of an NHL game for 31 months...7 weeks after the Flames beat Dallas.

The cap space that Colorado has to add between now and the deadline will be they key here short term, and clearly they weren't going to afford MacKinnon and him long term.

He won't re sign with Carolina, but they've made their move to push this season to take on the Caps.
