Answer me this question.
Why is Chris Tanev worth more than a 2nd round pick?
What led you to believe that? (for the posters who say this is a terrible return)
It has been WIDELY and PUBLICALLY documented that there was NO team that was willing to offer a 1st round pick for Tanev.
I would say the Stars only sent a prospect to the Flames BECAUSE of the retention and ultimately their offer won out because they threw in a conditional pick - no matter he ridculousness of the condition.

Way easier in that I will actually hope for the Stars to advance far. If the Oilers and Flames made a trade where a 2nd or 3rd round pick was conditional for them to advance in the playoffs I would still hope for the Oilers to lose in the first round.

Best case scenario
Dallas beats Vancouver in WCF

Why did Conroy stop at a 3rd? why not ask for a 2nd if they win the cup with Tanev +6 or higher. or a 1st if they win the cup and Tanev with a +12 or higher.

Out: Toffoli, Zadorov, Lindholm, Tanev
In: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, Sharangovich, Kuzmenko, Brzustewicz, Grushnikov, conditional 3rd.
Flames just need to tank from here on out, and throughout the duration of the 2024/2025 season as well.
It won't be a pretty process, but this is what is needed.

The return is fine and fair.
I just think that if this is the offer maybe you hold out a bit longer to see if they budge/up it a little more (even on their 3rd conditions i.e. western finals?)
75% is pretty generous.

Well the prospect and the third are pretty much nothing. So it's pretty much Tanev for around a 58th OA pick. Which is almost what the Flames paid to acquire Brandon Bollig.

If Dallas makes the Finals, we get a 3rd. If they don't we don't get another pick.

As mentioned, waiting until the last minute could have resulted in a better return but Tanev could also get injured again. He's had a couple nagging shoulder injuries as a Flame and blocks 8 shots a game.

This is the perfect example of “pigs get fat and hogs get slaughtered.”
Take your W and move onto the next deal and stick to the strategy.

1. We didn't bend to tree on either of his targets.
2. We didn't help Edmonton
3. It's now Conroys 3rd team he has traded with.

Because 30 games of defensemen as good as Tanev has been worth more than a 2nd and a nothing prospect.
Yes an extra second is good, but this is another good piece sold at 80% of it’s value, just like Lindholm and Zadorov.
Cam Whynot is a better prospect than Grushnikov and this team didn’t even sign him.

Aaron Vickers described Grusnikov heading into the draft:
Quote:
"Grushnikov might the best defensive and most reliable player in the class. He shows good patience, not rushing his decisions. When the play is coming at him, he’s good at keeping his opponent to the outside of the defensive zone and limiting their angle to get a shot off. He is not afraid to be physical in the corners and can win puck battles, which is very promising. He plays with an active stick and is good at closing off passing lanes as the plays transpire. He is not afraid to block shots and battle hard in front of the net, maintaining his position so that his opponent does not gain space. However, he does tend to cross his feet too early when defending the rush. He battles hard in his own end, knowing when to commit and chase a puck into the corner and when to hold back in his position. There are times when you can see him thinking about when to commit and when to not, thinking that will need to speed up moving forward – he’ll need to improve the speed of this processing. He tends to be the net-front presence in his own end, battling hard and tying his man up well. He’s definitely a defensively-minded defender. When attacking the puck carrier, he does well to get stick on stick, and then follow that up with his body. He’s not afraid to throw his body around and get in the carrier’s way. He’s very quick on his edges, with good movement in all four directions. While his straight-line speed isn’t overall impressive, he does show some intriguing movement. He has good posture from his ankles to knees and opens his hips well in his pivots. His puck-moving ability is slightly lacking however. With the puck, he tends to look to his defensive partner before looking up the ice. When looking up, he tends to just dump the puck. Through the season, he proved that he has the faith of the coaches, being utilized in all situations. There may not be much offensive upside with Grushnikov, but his defensive game could be one of the more intriguing in this class. The defensive ceiling could be very high and could see him rise up draft boards.

So yeah, you could do nothing and possibly have the exact same outcome on the ice except you establish a reputation
|
A reputation of blowing asset value for no reason? Just because you accept a trade doesn't mean the next one when you have leverage you can't force a tough deal.

Still 9 days away from the trade deadline and we pull the trigger on this deal. Yikes.

I am slightly underwhelmed but at the same time I never was expecting a big time prospect. His injury risks are just too high.
Tanev is an absolute warrior and seems to be a great human being. I hope he goes on to win a cup with the stars.
