In no way is it “the greatest move”, but maybe it’s the best current option for a multitude of reasons.
So I do think this is very likely the best trade available right now...

But I do also think that they took less than they could have garnered at the deadline by making this trade right now. (Especially considering its a 2026 3rd)

So I guess the question really is why they felt like they needed to make this move now.

Can I just say that I'm apprehensive about trades made within a few hours of puckdrop on a game day?

The team probably doesn't need the distraction of digesting a trade of a teammate while they're hitting the ice in an important game.

Did Craig need to do this right now? Probably not.

Hopefully he considers saving these bombshells for off days next time to allow the group a little window of time to adjust.

It looks like the 5th rounder is Chicago's pick. At least it will be a high 5th.

Oh? Who said Zadorov was worth a 1st+? Please show your work.

Get out of here with this garbage lol.

Well if he was bad in the locker room this will probably give the team more jump tonight if anything.

I don't know. The EBUG thing worked for the Las Vegas game.

Neither.

I keep circling back to disdain for the timing of this trade more than anything else.

His first game for VAN in Calgary? You just know that'll end well for the home squad.

Nonis needs to babysit Connie better.

Really consistent owner we’ve got
Treliving still trying to add cap dollars to the Flames even after he is gone. That's rich.

Is it the exact pick they got for Beauvillier?

The room was not happy with his public trade demand and it was a distraction in the room, he was very disengaged as well. They had to move him at this point, the return is decent imo for a #5 D man.

I remember going to the Flames-Flyers game on the 1st, which was the day after they traded Phaneuf, and an hour before they traded Jokinen+Prust for Higgins+Kotalik but there were rumors before that game that Jokinen had been traded but he played in that game anyways.

Honestly think that was probably my low point as a Flames fan. Their young stud dman traded for magic beans, they lost 3-0 to the Flyers and looked terrible (first time in my life I left a Flames game early), and then the guy we thought was our answer as a 1st line C (Jokinen) and a heart and soul guy in Prust were traded for Chris Higgins and Ales Kotalik. Man was late stage GM Sutter bad.

Honestly think that was the darkest time that I recall in the last 15 years for this franchise.

I only jumped to the last page, so it may have been said before ...

A selling team having cap space can be a big part of opening up a later trade. Being able to take on a bigger expiring contract suddenly increases the number of teams that you can deal with.

I'm thinking that any trade involving zad or tanev might be just to grease the wheels on the two big trades to be made. I wouldn't read too much into the physical return.

I wonder if the offers would have been better if he hadn't made his trade demand public? It can't help your bargaining position when other teams know that you have to move a player.

I think you'll still see a Flames/Leafs trade for one of the other 2 dmen, with salary retained. Maybe soon.

So, there's the thing... let's call it "What are we doing with this team?" ...and I like to think of this thing as, I don't know, some sort of metaphor representing a big thing made up of smaller things. Let's say an engine made up of parts... or a building made of steel and concrete... or... a hockey team made of players and coaches and training staff.

The point is, sometimes there are sticks... and sometimes there are snowballs. There are even times where sand is involved. And birds. But all that really matters is what you do with all that water. That's how you build a hockey team.

if the Flames were unable to make a better trade because of an unwillingness to retain salary on 2023, I am unbelievably disappointed.

Any one call making room for Zadorov on the Beauvillier trade?

If so, good job. Turns out Vancouver wanted him a little more than they were letting on.
