not good enough for the Flames though, we need so and so lighting up the AHL who can do the same thing cheaper

Hanifin extending in and of itself is not bad. Good age, and an 8 year deal is buying no ugly years age-wise, that’s good. Way more onboard with Noah than Elias when it comes to extension, as I imagine the players ask is also more in line with what we’d expect to see.
It does muddy the waters to a degree as he is a good player that will prevent a bottoming out - but as is being discussed, the Flames don’t think they should bottom out, so they won’t (until forced to do so).
I don’t think Hanifin is impactful enough to really hamper a bottoming either though, so yeah - if the trade market isn’t there for Noah, there’s very little downside in extending him.

That’s… not evidence of anything.

I would trade both Hanifin and Lindholm if I have to pay top line/top pairing money long term for them.
They have shown nothing to prove they can carry a top line or top pairing and nothing on the team that can help them productive at that role.

Why am I repulsed by the thought of 9.3x8 and 6.75x8?
Probably because it's too much for too long for both guys.
And if we signed those contracts we would be hard pressed to compete any time soon.

I actually don't think 6.75x8 is terrible for Hanifin. The 9.3x8 is terrible though

So is Hanifin good and worth a haul in a trade or crap and not worth signing? I can’t reconcile the idea that he’s crap and not worth signing but also simultaneously good and worth a haul in a trade.
But I’m not a great hockey mind so maybe I don’t get it.

Flames want to sign him. Will trade him if he doesn't sign. I don't even think they have really shopped him.

7 250 000 x 8 is the walk away number for me.
Hanifin is young so you can re-sign him and be fairly confident that you won't be getting much decline throughout the deal. At a certain point though you have to walk away. He is a solid number 2 defender and doesn't deserve above 8 million a year.

I think $6.75MM x 8 for Hanifin is actually great, and less than what he'll actually sign for.

I thought it was the reverse. He won't return much in a trade but we'll have to pay dearly to re-sign him.

'Happy there are discussions': Flames' Hanifin confirms contract talks

“I’ve always enjoyed my time playing in Calgary. I love it here. It’s been great. Sometimes, being patient with things helps and just give yourself some time to think about the process and what you want to do. But for me, I’ve always loved Calgary and I’m happy there are discussions happening.”

At least he's giving some love to Calgary!
