Didn’t they almost win the west last year? They did win it four years ago.
Was Edwards the owner then?

We judge success totally differently.
Winning the division is meaningless.
In fact, even winning the presidents trophy is meaningless. I’d say presidents trophy is less valuable then winning the first round. Heck the presidents trophy and first round exit may be worse than not making the playoffs.

It’s all a question of defining soon. No doubt the team would one day be sold or moved if the owners don’t have an arena situation they find acceptable.
So when is soon? I’d say if there is no arena agreement this calendar year there will be a lot more noise from CSEC. I could see some kind of public declaration of a deadline.

In some ways I hope the team moves. New owner might take a realistic look at the team and do it right.

I expect Danielle Smith to make an Arena funding announcement during the election campaign. She’s backing herself into a corner with all her boneheaded ideas and she needs to buy more votes.

I doubt the team is going to move. Cooler heads will eventually prevail. Although they better hurry. Inflation isn’t going to help their project’s bottom line.

However, after the report in the Review-Journal was published Wednesday, Oakland mayor Sheng Thao said the city would end those negotiations and pursue other projects for the waterfront site.
|
If you look at the cases, they are quite similar. Flames are now where the A's were 5-10 years ago. The last new areas in the NHL was Detroit in 2017, Vegas and Seattle don't count.
Even if the Flames cut a deal tomorrow, we're looking at 2027?
|
It's funny how the whole sporting world shunned the Vegas market for decades until the NHL tried it out first. Then the major American sports leagues watched and were like "WHATTTT??!! We're in!!!!!!".

It actually had more to do with the relaxation of gambling laws around the nation and the acceptance of sports gambling across the board. Gambling is now entrenched in all sports, which is why Vegas is no longer taboo. The NHL and Bettman were the first to read the tea leaves correctly and get ahead of the game, so to speak.

It's the opposite of embarrassing. It means the voter base in Calgary understands economics and hasn't been hoodwinked into giving owners/players a massive subsidy.

Being the first team in LV was a stroke of genius by the NHL. Only state where an NHL team is the most popular team beating out the NFL.

Google trends and survey data. I'm also a Raiders fan and it's known that locally the Knights are more popular than the Raiders.

I appreciate that the Golden Knights as a franchise really embraced that they are producing an entertainment product. Their games seem like more fun to be at than the rest of the NHL.

I'd also be curious how many travel agents/hotels offer tickets to tourists? Must be a significant proportion of the arena.

If you talk to sports fans in Vegas, they will tell you they love the Knights over the Raiders. The Knights are Vegas's own team, the Raiders are a product from another city. It was an interesting take when talking to fans out there. I, for one, never thought hockey would be huge in Vegas.

Yeah, the Raiders have moved so often they are perceived as mercenaries.
