If somebody in Atlanta wants to build a new rink and then spend close to a $1B on expansion fees to try to have a team there then you'd be foolish to not let them if you are Bettman.

The Jets came back 12 years ago.

To me it's as close as you can come to a European city in NA. Old Montreal and some areas in Boston are similar.

Houston makes sense. Portland and Kansas City seem more viable to me than trying Atlanta again though. Hell, you could even argue Baltimore or Cincy.
Although we all know who should really get another chance.

This argument might work if Edwards had successfully built arenas in other cities, but as it stands CSEC is clearly the issue (CoC already voted to approve a deal FFS)

I hope we expose some of those long-term cap anchors.

No its the Flames way that by time this comes around they will be coming through a rebuild/retool and lose a couple players that would have been able to contribute.

If you look at 1996 (expansion to 26 teams) and compare it to the world population at the time, equivalently diluted talent would be 35 teams today.
No idea if more or less kids are playing per capita, globally. I couldn't find those numbers.

Quebec City simply isn't a market big enough to support an NHL team nor is it a TV market that's going to help grow revenues.

How many big markets actually make a difference with tv viewership? Do the Kings or Dallas or another big city actually generate huge tv ratings? If a city is a big market but only a small percentage of the population is actually interested in the sport, is it really a "big market"?

The number of hockey players in Canada is not only unable to keep up with population growth, but is in decline.

I'm always amazed at how many people in Dallas are fans. The games are often on TV in bars (even when the Mavs are playing). The viewership here is higher than people assume I suspect.

It's the potential of viewership that makes it a big market. The payoff can be more significant than what you can get in a city like Calgary.
