I think Qatar win tomorrow. They are not a bad side. They are Asian Champs.

Ecuador cannot score so it has the potential to be 0-0. The game definitely will need an early goal.

Over/Under on a minimum of 2 penalties for Qatar?

The England captain, Harry Kane, and his Wales counterpart, Gareth Bale, are to defy Fifa by wearing “OneLove” rainbow armbands in their World Cup matches, after the governing body launched its own “social campaign” on the eve of the tournament.

Fifa has asked that all captains wear a different armband on each match day, promoting social messages such as “Football unites the world”, “Share the meal” and “Bring the moves”. The decision was announced months after a number of countries approached Fifa asking to wear rainbow armbands in Qatar as a gesture against discrimination and in support of LGBTQ+ rights.

They received no response to their request, with England and Wales both surprised by Fifa’s last-minute initiative on Saturday. But both FAs have reaffirmed their intention to wear the rainbow armbands, with the likely prospect that they will be fined for doing so...

..During Saturday’s press conference in Doha, Gianni Infantino, the Fifa president, was asked why the governing body had not publicly supported the rainbow armbands, and launched its own campaign instead.

“We have clear regulations on armbands,” Infantino replied. “We have and engage in campaigns on different topics, campaigns which are universal. We need to find topics that everyone can adhere to. This is an important element for us.”

Why aren't more countries doing this? Is Canada doing anything? The Americans?

You speak as if he has a lot of experience in international tournaments.

Well it’s the eve of the World Cup and I figured we should have some fun. I setup a WC predictor here: https://www.kicktipp.co.uk/calgarypuck/

You have to put scores for each game and it gives you the betting odds. It will also ask you to pick a winner, golden boot winner and who will make the semi finals. It’s five points for choosing the right score, three for the correct margin and one for right winner but wrong score and margin.

Hopefully we get a lot of participants!

Good on these guys for leading this. I hope everybody follows suit and starts making some noise about this.

Just to touch on this... The Guardian have been doing a team by team rundown, and one of the things they look at is their stance on Qatar. The South Americans (and Mexico) and Africans have no opinion on this stuff, it's footballing business as usual for them.

Hm.

That is odd. You'd think that specific demographic would be frothing at the mouth about this.

Can you predict scores for the matches the day of or have to get them all in before tournament starts?

I’m guessing because they have a history of mistreatment as migrant workers themselves. But that’s often not how these things work.

The US have their country badge in rainbow colors all over the training facility

Not wearing it during matches though which is kinda the point, seems like an empty gesture

Canada is disappointingly not even offering an empty gesture it looks like, hope something comes up before wednesday that changes their mind

I'm pleased that CMNT are there to play football and are focused on that.
Leave the virtue signaling to others. A rainbow armband will not fix the real issues.

You make predictions a few days ahead. I don’t know the exact cutoff, but I think it’s at kickoff, and after that you can’t alter scores. So, at this point you’re predicting for the first few days and you’ll have to go back in and make more predictions as things move along.

So far there are five of us. People can join late, in case you read this and still want to get in. Missing one game isn’t a big deal!
