Monahan is probably the only recent former player whom I wish well. Those other two guys can go shovel snow from the front of the goalie crease.

Can Tkachuk even do that? I doubt he can get the snow shovel between his legs.

Nope, Backlund scored that. Gaudreau tied it late in the 3rd.

Yeah, we just kicked Monahan to the curb for nothing right?
Solid work son.

We are also still owed "Future Considerations" from Montreal. Maybe they will send us a smoked meat sandwich.
But I really Hope Tre is actually building a relationship with Kent Hughes where they will help each other out every now and then.

do their media people run the reddit twitter though? i think those are just internet dummies . as for the meida, i would sincerely hope that the great hockey minds of montreal are smart enough to know they know that the flames didn't give away monahan and an undetermined 1st for charity or to help the habs . there was indeed something in it for the flames ... 6.35 in cap space to lock down kadri long term and form one of the best center groups in the nhl
5-1 on the season so far and 9pts in 6 games for nazem . i think the flames are quite content with their decisions

One of the story-lines that I was eager to follow this season was Monahan's health and production this year with Calgary. l was betting that he would have a rebound year with his long lay-off, and the only question would be how high of a rebound.
However, there is no second-guessing that trade. I can't imagine Treliving didn't spend a lot of time on the phone trying to unload Monahan at the cheapest rate possible - outside of perhaps rivals maybe. I hated losing Monahan, but considering why the Flames needed to do so (and even with hindsight), that was and continues to be the right move.
As for Gaudreau.. I do miss him. Him and Huberdeau or two completely different players. I would peg this team as Stanley cup favourites (or at least, in the same conversation as Tampa and Colorado) with Gaudreau on the team, and Lucic also being shopped away (and I really do love Lucic and think he adds a lot to this team - I hope he is re-signed next season). It is the same rationale as to why I hope that the Flames manage to trade for Kane this year (though I do very much doubt it). It makes the Flames almost impossible to defend, while being very elite defensively. Oilers would remain the team with the most offensive ability, but large holes everywhere else. It is still fun watching him. He is dynamic with the puck. Even after losing him, I find him to be one of the league's most entertaining players to watch. Tkachuk not so much. I am glad that the Flames aren't having to deal with his antics, and I bet that LA won't be playing up as much to the Flames any longer (as I imagine a lot of other teams won't either).

monahan back near his normal self is a good player, but would not bring anywhere close to what kadri provides this team with .. otherwise the flames would have had much more success from 2016-2020
no regrets (and still plenty of love for monahan)

Monahan was never going to get the ice-time and opportunity to resurrect his career in Calgary with the current center depth, and I would still take Kadri any day over Monahan.
I am happy for him and hope he stays healthy and productive. I am expecting him to get injured again at some point though with his history. I hope not, but it seems likely with his history.

It still hurts to give up that 1st rounder. Especially since you never know, Florida could have a terrible year and it could be a decently high pick.
Outcome is great obviously with being able to sign Kadri. First rounder just seems like overpay now in hindsight with how well Monahan has started the season.

I like Lucic and he's had as good a start to the season as one could hope.
But a cup is probably the only thing that can stop me from lamenting that it was Monahan and not him. I wasn't ready to see Monny go, and I'm glad he's regaining form in Montreal.
Still holding out hope he's just coming right back on an economical deal next year. I think with this current roster you could slide Kadri up, Lindy over, Toffi down and make space fore another C in the top 9. But for his sake it would great if he plays his way out of an economy deal.

I’m happy for Monahan just to get healthy; it’s easy to second guess how things could have played out differently but it’s all in the past now. My only concern is that he doesn’t have a real great track record of staying healthy, even if his hips have recovered.
I wonder if Columbus goes hard after Monahan as a UFA? I do think if he has a good year, Montreal could be a good fit as it’s “close to home, but not too close”. I don’t think he’s coming back here — like Gio, once you rip the band aid off and let the wound heal I think it’s off for good.

The Jackets looking for some of the old Johnny Monny magic by reuniting those two, it's got merit, they did score a lot of goals. Wonder if Tre shopped Monahan to Columbus with that angle before striking a deal with Montreal.

They didn't have over 6M in Cap space to take Monahan...not many did

Monahan I will cheer throughout this season and hope to see him have a career year and win the Masterton, but moving him to get Kadri was a good move. It was a true win-win. As much as I wish him well, I don't feel he's missed on the ice for the Flames.
Gaudreau on the other hand, I would take back in an instant. If the Flames had the current roster + Johnny, they would be a dream team. I don't expect to see another player like Johnny on the team again for many years. Huberdeau is excellent too and the team is better than last year now, but if there's a parallel universe where the Flames somehow kept Johnny, made the Tkachuk trade, and still brought in Kadri, I want to watch their games.

Said this in another thread but Monahan is still the slow footed guy he always was. He’s just not crippled atm. If he couldn’t keep up with top lines defensively in his prime what makes you think he will now? So yeah he can be a number two center on a crap team but he has no spot here. Now I like the guy and will root for him but it’s different expectations for a guy on a crappy team.
