Chances to draft Bedard were not good with Darryl coaching this year.
Chances to maintain relevance and repair the recent blow to the city with a superstar signing were much, much more in their favour.
Throwing away what you built for 8 years for a slim chance is just not savvy team managing. Especially if you're aiming at not being a laughing stock and putting butts in seats.
The goal of the sport is to win, not play 82 games wasting your players time just to get your name in a hat for 1 elite piece.

No ####, people worry too much...Flames just won a division with those two on the books. In 9 years the cap will probably be 150M

Water under the bridge at this point but I do wonder if Johnny looks at this contract and wonder how the hell he ended up in Ohio for less money

If somehow Monahan can score 25 and Pelletier brings some offense this could be a special season.

Huberdeau and Weegar take up approximately 9m this year
Lucic and Monahan take up about 12
For a total of 21m
Next year Huberdeau and Weegar should take up about 17m
Lucic and Monahans 12 mill gone.
4 million to replace those two players.

They did it in Vancouver with Messier. More recently in TO with Tavares. It's fine. There are few things more over-rated and inconsequential as NHL captaincies.

Well he's got one more year on his current deal then when the new one kicks in he will be 30. Still not a huge deal to me, elite players are often still very good in their mid-30's.

Maybe, but losing a 24 year old #### disturber that can play for a guybthat can play but is heading into his twilight doesn't seem like much of a win too me. Like I said, first few years will be fine but if they don't win in these first few years its going to be bad. I'm a die hard fan and I love this team, I just don't much care for this decision.

He knows exactly how he ended up in Ohio for less money as he and his wife orchestrated it. He turned down the exact same money from the Flames. He only has himself to blame for taking less money.

Sutter is very traditional and deliberate about these things. I still expect Tanev, now with a year of tenure, to be highly considered this season for the C. JH possibly an A.

Timing of CNQ issuing a special dividend is neat. Murray is basically giving all that money to Huberdeau.
I was a little surprised seeing him today as he walked into the Ensign building.
