Didn't always agree with his takes but he was entertaining and a good host. Pinder is a good side kick but when he was put into the big chair, I thought the show suffered.

Maybe he will go the Rob Kerr way and get a job in hockey relations. Guy is a great personality and could be a big asset. He has a lot of good connections with the Flames charity and many local businesses.

Just disappointing. He's the pillar of the station.
I think Matt Rose has been coming into his own these last few months and has been an entertaining listen. Would be nice to see him given more responsibility.

That is brutal news. Literally the only reason I tuned in to that station. Pinder is decent, but I wonder what direction they can go with the morning show. If it goes the way of hot takes and hard core homerism like most local stations, I'll pass.

People are going to have their takes but I really like Ryan Pinder and he can definitely host. But losing Boom really, really sucks. He mentioned he doesn't have anything lined up but I don't imagine it'll take him long - guy is talented.

Crappy to hear. Boomer is the anchor to the morning show. Even the 9am hour when he's not on dips in quality. I think this is probably the death knell for the station as we currently know it. With all the recent cost cutting measures from Rogers already screwing the station, I just don't see how the quality of the station doesn't take another huge dip now.

Rogers is the absolute worst thing to happen to hockey. Somebody release the NHL from its death grip.

Why would he leave if he doesn't have anything else lined up? Are these guys on contracts? If he was salaried then he would have been best served to wait until they fold to get a package.

My guess is he's leaving the industry in terms of a full time job but perhaps we see him continue with a podcast.
There's just no money for good talent in broadcasting.
I would further guess that they told him what they could pay him going forward and it wasn't enough to crawl out of bed that early each day.
All guesses.

Yeah to be clear I'm just passing along what Boomer said. But many people will leave their jobs without something lined up. I personally wouldn't be comfortable doing that myself but many have zero issue with it for many reasons.

Pinder is good but he’s a 1a at best. He needs a strong front man, which Boomer is. He and Steinberg will be the only remaining ones who are tolerable.
I miss listening to the afternoon show. Gordon and Nault or horrible and not can’t bring myself to tuning in.
Best of luck to Boomer wherever he goes, I’ll miss his brand of broadcasting.

Yeah there's little doubt that the Rogers NHL deal has been the worst thing to ever happen to Canadian fans. Still four years to go but at least there is a little light at the end of the tunnel on the back half of this jail sentence.

Even if you don’t care about 960 or anything like that, it’s hard not to notice how the NHL is growing and the presentation product in the US is reflecting that, while if you followed the dramatics with Rogers here you would think the league was on it’s way to closing it’s doors due to lack of interest with the constant firings, cancellations, and closures.
A truly awful company and a complete embarrassment to the sport. Canadians deserve so much better.

recall the initial tranisition from mike richards to boomer was tough as richards had a lot of funny extras; however, over time i thought boomer has grown in the role and the morning show struck a balance between being fun and providing some insight.
will be interesting to see how the fan reacts to this change which is right at their "slow" time in terms of the NHL season ending - maybe the fan does not do much until closer to when the boys ae back in town in the fall

Without Boomer, Fan 960 is done.
Or at least I'm done with them. Other than gameday broadcasts.

Good insight and makes sense. You know this industry better than most. What might he cost salary wise? And further, what does it cost to buy an AM radio station or even just a morning 3 hour slot? Thinking if he wanted to do this there is money in that town to make it happen on his own.

I'm not going to speculate on his salary.
But no I don't think there is money for that, because it's a money losing proposition.
And COVID probably has made it even worse, because the traditionally this time slot is called the 'morning drive' for a reason. Commuter traffic is key to the listener base and with some chunk of the population still not driving to and from work, or driving less days to and from, I imagine all ratings have taken a huge hit that is not going to rebound the full way. (the ratings are typically available online somewhere but I haven't looked to see how they are doing).
So the stations are continuing to drive costs down and the biggest cost center is talent. And specifically experienced talent.
Less people and less experienced talent is going to be the norm.

My thought was that TSN is coming to town with the announcement of "changes" coming to HNIC and the Fan.
Maybe he just takes the summer off and comes back as morning host when TSN starts a station.

Pinder is off on vacation this week, they played it as he got to start vacation a bit early.
I'm sure Boomer has something lined up, outside of radio, simply because if he was going to another station, they would take him off the air immediately. "Notices" are rarely announced in the radio industry.
Boomer, his wife and family are "home" in Calgary, I can't see him packing them all up and moving to another market.
