Bad passing into the zone by Hanifin. A couple times.

Pretty sad looking power play.

Noah's not on the same page as the rest of the team the last couple games.

Flames powerkill has returned.
Since that goal vs Columbus, Toffoli has been quite underwhelming.

The Flames don't look extra special today...they're playing a bit more like a middle of the pack team. I think I'm missing the high intensity hockey I've grown accustomed to lol. I guess the Flames aren't known for playing the greatest hockey during early games though.
It's kind of nice when "normal" is a problem.

Toffoli and Coleman need switching. I also much prefer Lucic on that 4th line. That whole third line doesn’t feel right at the moment.

Backlund and Coleman are great together and they are doing a tremendous job as the shut-down line
I agree that Lucic should stay on the 4th line.
Dube-Monahan-Toffoli just needs a bit of time to gel

I hate coaches challenges except for around the goal, if the lineman misses a centimeter offside...so be it.

The offside rule should be a black and white rule imo. Better to get it right, as much as it sucked for the Flames this time. Refs sometimes miss fairly obvious offsides and the challenge was introduced for that reason. Imagine losing a playoff series because the linesman didn't get an offside call right.

Agreed. You're not gaining an advantage when we're talking about millimeters

Exactly, the rule is to prevent a player cherry-picking and never leaving the zone. It was never meant to be measured down to the millimetre -- and for the first 90 or so years of the rule, it was perfectly-fine being left up to the linesmen.

The issue I have is that the calls that are black and white like offside are rarely totally blown. Even when it’s an incorrect call in the moment, like it was there, it’s not like the incorrect call was a devastating error. So I am not sure the review truly adds much to the integrity of the game.
The calls that are much more often missed are the subjective (interference, hooking, slashing, etc). The are also the ones that are not called in the last few minutes of the game. The variable threshold of these calls almost negates any possibility of introducing a review process. However, these are the types of calls that really plagues the league. By no means do I want to introduce a review process for each of these subjective calls. But I think it shouldn’t be CRAZY to think that a review process could be implemented and reasonable.

The problems come when the odd egregious mistakes give rise to unduly onerous responses. Linesmen blew a couple calls resulting in important goals and so the league overreacted. Now I wonder if the linesmen blow fewer offsides because they figure if a goal happens someone will challenge. Same for high stick goals and GI.

I totally understand the 'just get every call right' mentality but when 80% of the game is already left up to the refs discretion and we're told getting it wrong is just part of the game, I just don't see how or why offsides are the hill to die on for this argument. The whole thing is silly to me

Yup
The NHL pay linesman up to 250k a year to call it the way they see it, it should mean something
