Engelland, Ryan and Frolik were all good UFA signings who were decent value for all but the last year of their contracts. Can't ask much more from a UFA.
But they don't belong with Tanev and the others on Jiri's list.
But maybe Deryk gets on list because of this perfect moment

The percentage is boosted by playing a team that doesn't generate a lot of high danger chances but 16 is a big number.
On this 9 game win streak they've only had more than 16 high danger chances and have averaged 11.
Mangiapane and Gaudreau score on empty net chances in the second and they likely win this 5-1 and everyone thinks they're rolling over teams.

yeah listening to the guys on the way home and they were implying "oh sure the shots on goal were close , but if you watched the game I bet you'd agree the high danger chances were about even. it was a really close game" (paraphrasing)
I was driving home thinking...hmm I don't think so. sure Markstrom made an incredible save and I could think of about 4 shifts where I was a bit nervous because the Kraken had pressure and it was a tie game , (plus the end with the net pulled). but Flames could have easily had 5 or 6 (great saves, fluke saves, missing wide open nets, sticks shattering on breakways etc)

Yeah the 04 playoffs are enough for me to put Gelinas above a guy like Hamrlik.

You have to consider the 'deliciousness factor' of having almost literally stolen him from the Oilers.
We saved you Scoreface.

Absolutely.
That and the contract was a steal. The original UFA deal was 4 years/10.2, with a cap hit of $2.55/year.

heck lets just pretend for example, say...'it was in....' then I think he would hold the belt until the team really makes another run

Yeesh yeah that's a guy I somehow forgot was a UFA signing. By strength of two historic goals he goes near the top for sure. Probably top 5.

What's going to be the next excuse in Oilerland for the Flames being a better team? Red is a faster colour than blue?

They are the hockey version of flat earthers and deserve that level of engagement

Right! I forgot what he was making over those 4 years.
That was a great deal.

With all due respect to Engelland, I wouldn't put him near the top 10 Flames UFA signings of all time. He was very very tough and fun to watch at times but also struggled pretty regularly in his own zone. Overpaid by around $1.5 million per season.
Didn't the Flames sign a bunch of guys out of college in the 80s?

yah I mentioned that in my post on the last page...not sure its today's topic but amateur and college FAs I think Flames lead the table- St Louis, Gio, Otto, Roloson, Macoun, Patterson etc

I thought it was three years at 1.2 per year. Oilers were making a pitch for Hossa and lost a guy who signed very cheap because they literally told him he was second class.
The 4 year 10.2 deal was an extension, ended up being his last contract.

@loooooob — Yeah I mean that's more an amateur scouting thing than a pro scouting accomplishment, but still... Giordano is easily the best Flames UFA signing ever.

In Gio’s first return game after 15 seasons with the Flames, many as captain, after going undrafted and signing with the team, we are debating g the ‘best UFA signings in Flames history’ and he doesn’t make this list?!

I just think there are different categories of free agent signings.
Technically you're 100% correct, but a walk on guy that gets a three way contract isn't the same risk in term and dollars as the guys brought in on July 1st.

No all good.
As I said you're correct. So would Joel Otto and Colin Patterson etc.

Agreed, the reality is that if Hanifin doesn't gift Jarnkrok a goal the game never feels close and we are talking about Markstroms 9th shutout. (Obviously)

It is absolutely crazy to think that this team was 4-4-4 on home ice, and is now 13-4-4 on home ice.
What a dominating stretch of Flames hockey.
