At least I'm honest enough to admit the Flames are a mess as of currently. The Canucks did even worse though.

It's like the Suter buyout? Why? He's still in your top four. So you fix one year and then quietly watch the league for four more?

Wow, we agree on something on back-to-back days. Isn't that a sign of the coming apocalypse?

Garland is really really good, super strong top 9 now
OEL is an upgrade on edler
I'm choosing not to look at the years past next year at this point

And they missed adding a pretty good prospect to continue to build.
I think they've now leaped-frogged the Flames in terms of erroring to try and contend now.
Though I'm not going to pretend that Garland isn't a nice piece that gives them some elements in their forward group that will help.
But that OEL deal - good grief.

Exactly. The only difference is you have two less picks (including 9oa this year) and you have a small scoring RW who I assume takes second line minutes behind Boeser, on a line with Horvat and either Hoglander or Miller.

Edler was gone for free. Depending on what you are looking for, Barrie, Suter, Hamilton, Savard, Murray, Vatanen... all out there without picking up that huge contract and sending picks away.

The Garland thing is the one saving grace, hes been really good
So if the lotto line stays together they have
Horvat, garland, hoglander, pearson, podkolzin, dickinson to put together the middle 6 in some combo

I also agreed that a $2M house is worth more than a $200K house.

As a Flames fan, this is a very good trade. Benning is looking out for Flames fans and their interests longterm. Having OEL and Schmidt anchor that defence for the next 4 years is fantastic.

I mean you can say that but there are apparently stupid general managers who still think OEL is good based on who he used to be. It's sort of like Seabrook. Skinner doesn't even have that "well he used to be that good" factor - he was never really a 9M player.

I was looking at their capfriendly page and I realized they have Podkolzin coming over, who you'd have to think they want to put into the top 6 as a RW... so what does this mean? They don't have any faith in their former 1st round RW? Or they're trading Brock Boeser?

They bought him out so they wouldn't have to expose Dumbba or one of their other younger d-men.

Podkolzin and hoglander can both play either wing
Podkolzin makes a ton of sense to start with Dickinson too

This trade should take the Canucks out of the Wright sweepstakes as it should improve them for next year.
