This team wasn’t out of the POs at the deadline before Brodie went UFA. That was two seasons ago. In fact they won the play-in and lost to the cup finalists.

Now they could have traded Gio at the last TDL. But like it or not, they were chasing the Habs and thought they had a shot then. I’m not sure what team would have afforded the cap hit even at that point in the season, knowing they’d probably end up exposing him.

ETA: at the halfway point of the year a lot of posters were actively hoping Gio would be taken, because his season was so rough to that point. Most thought he wouldn’t be taken. His mid season turnaround actually caused this issue.

Hindsight 20/20. This team was never going to just blow it up after that amazing season. 90% of the fans probably believed this core was destined for greatness, you included.

And nobody was taking on Gio at last year's deadline with the upcoming expansion draft, Gio's declining play and the flat cap.

Honestly, freeing up almost 7M cap space is probably the best thing that could have came out of this scenario, and there's still a bunch of people sour about it.

Actually, when the season ended because of COVID the flames were not in a playoff spot.

They got into the bubble because of the "play in" series the league invented.

IMO they should have traded Brodie that year at the deadline, but that's just me. Instead they bled out a few more picks to bring in Gustafsson and Forbort.

And they should have re-signed Forbort. He’s good. At least a third round pick good.

Actually, the CP Negative Nancy brigade was already convinced that the team was worthless in spite of their regular season because Nathan McKinnon activated God mode in the playoffs. You see, a best-of-seven series gives you a much more valid statistical sample of where a team is at than a whole 82-game season. The Flames were an awful horrible hopeless team that year, and only won those 50 games because the real hockey teams all felt sorry for them, yessirree.

What can I say that hasn't already been said, Gio and Iggy are my two fave Flames of all time.

I remember watching Gio in his first season when he was a no-name signing and I started to take notice of his decision-making, his opportunism on the ice, and his commitment and (like many) started to think, whoa we might have a player here.

The rest as they say is history. What a great player, captain, leader and Flames. Thanks Mark and good luck the rest of the way. Sad to see you go.

They were the 7th best team in the league from when Peters resigned until the lockdown. They were 8th in points % so technically in a playoff spot by the way the league decided on the standings and trending towards the playoffs

Wrong. They were the #8 seed, Winnipeg was #9.

Calgary was third in the Pacific at the time of suspension (March 12). And at the end of the season the Flames were in 8th if you go by percentage (because if the uneven games played). So no, they didn’t get in just because of the play-in.

Brad is one of the worst GMs for asset management, ok at least second next to Holland in Edm. We keep losing assets and getting nothing in return all on the hopes of squeaking into a play-off spot. He sounded anything but confident on the interview after the Gio announcement tonight.

They should have just traded Gio for a 7th and let Kylington get taken in the draft so at least the current batch of whiners would be happy. That’s just basic asset management!

Judging from that Darren Haynes quote it sounds like Gio wanted out of the dumpster fire that Tree has created.

Sure, if you've already persuaded yourself that everything is wrong and it's all Treliving's fault.

It didn't sound that way to me at all. It sounded like Giordano was behaving like an actual grown-up.

Hard to blame some fans for not recognising what that is.
