I am preparing myself for Dube or Valimaki being sent to Seattle to protect Gio. These players fell out of favor with Sutter, so I could see them being seen as "expendable"

What a waste of a young still improving asset if that were to happen. Talk about a fireable offence.

BT makes some poor decisions but he isn't that dumb.

No doubt ownership wants to make the playoffs every year. I feel this in particular is probably being driven by Darryl.

Given all the reports that Seattle are asking “extortionate” prices for side deals, there’s no way they’re only asking a 3rd or a 4th to pass on Gio. They’re asking for at least a 2nd. Or a 3rd and a good prospect.

Who clearly has the ear of ownership.

If they send Dube or Valimaki or a 1st, I will be upset. If they send a 2nd, I don’t think that will be ideal.

He's still a 2/3 guy league wide.

He's not retiring at the end of the season.

I think one of the reasons they are kicking tires to keep him is he's invested and would likely do the Joe Thornton / Cdeno Chara single year deals going forward.

That's a good cheap flexible option for a team.

I love Gio as much as every other fan, but you just don't give up a 2nd or 3rd to keep a soon to be 38 year old with one more year on his contract. It would sting to see Gio in another jersey, but I'd take it over such bad asset management.

Is it just me, or does the OP just say "looking into" isn't this what BT always does, looks into everything and passes on most?

It also say LeBrun believes trading other D has been explored, doesn't mean that is connected to Gio, other teams may have called about our D.

Gio is still a good D, so doing due diligence to see if we can get them to pick someone more to our liking is a good idea. If the price is high alright, easy no, though I'm not convinced Gio is the pick even if left exposed.

Well you are not getting a better player at the deadline for a 3rd so I wouldn’t lose my mind if they simply gave a 3rd and Seattle selected Ryan or even Kylington. I hope they don’t pay a futures price to keep Gio and have Seattle select a minimum contract player.

I agree how an organization treats their players helps attract UFA, which helps success, but I doubt an expansion draft is going to hurt our reputation.

For fan emotion reasons, and the possibly of a good trade at next year deadline, I could see a low level draft pick being thrown towards Seattle.
The team is going to suck either way. Why not have a feel good story at the end of the season (if he retires)?

Derek Ryan is a UFA. And according ing to more than one Pundit, the guy they're going to sign to meet expansion requirements is Ritchie.

I'm only saying this because I've seen a fair bit of Derek Ryan talk in expansion and I don't think that'll be the case.

I could live with a 3rd. That is the absolute max they should pay though. I still think they are better off using Gio's cap to just sign someone else. That and this team needs a leadership change.

It would be in the Flames best interests that Seattle take Gio.

It is a salary dump

Thank goodness they haven't ask for a 2nd round pick in order to take him.

The 6.75 M in cap space is a tangible asset.

Sure the Oilers made an mistake taking on 11M in cap and 3.6 M in actual salary for Keith over 2 years and not getting a 2nd or 3rd coming their way . But the Flames look like they can get rid of Gio's 6.750 cap hit AND salary by letting the Kraken pick him. Should be no second thoughts. Take the win.

Is there anyone any where that think that Gio is a 6.75 M player? If the Flames want to keep him they should extend his contract for a couple of years a 5M per year.

The idea that the Flames will trade him at the TDL? Absurd.

The Flames were a bubble team with likely a 50% chance of making the playoffs when they kept Brodie. How far out would the Flames have to be out of contention and how bad would Gio be playing for the Flames to trade him at TDL?

If Gio is playing at a level that other teams would want him for a playoff rental the Flames would be within 8-10 points of a wild card spot and the Flames would almost certainly keep him.

The only possible reason to take extraordinary measures to keep Gio would be that the Flames are counting on the laws of probability reverting to the norm and Gio getting 20 playoff games this season.

As it stands he would be have the lowest number of playoff games of any post expansion era players to be considered for the HOF

Some different ways I would be okay with the Flames protecting Gio

1. pay a 2nd+3rd with the agreement Seattle selects Lucic. This is more about moving the Lucic deal but also has the benefit of protecting Gio and still opens up significant cap room to maybe take a run at Landeskog, or Hall

2. Purposely expose Backlund knowing that is who Francis prefers. Obviously this would be discussed in advance but sacrificing Backlund to protect Gio is something I can get behind. The long term cap relief helps the team especially with 3 pretty huge deals up next year (Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Mangiapane)

3. Making a hockey deal where the team sends a protected asset but also gets an asset back from Seattle via another team. Trading Backlund or Monahan for a piece and part of that deal also ensures Seattle takes another Flame not named Gio in expansion.

There is some overreaction but my take on the news referenced in the OP is not that Flames are looking for a bargain in retaining Gio but just the opposite, are highly motivated to keep him and are willing to pay a premium.

Let’s wait and see what happens obviously but I’m in the slightly nervous camp. Now I also believe there’s a chance that this is some PR type stuff to make it would like they don’t want to lose him. The Flames don’t seem to run a tight ship in this regard unless it’s Gio’s agent leaking all this.
