Barrie was above expectations, certainly.
Whether he was "Very good" is another story.
Over the years, the top point getting D man usually sneaks AT LEAST into the top three in Norris voting.
Barrie was the top scoring defenseman, and got exactly zero Norris Votes - from the same voters that Voted Draisaitl second for the Selke.

What if Holland said kostinem and Jones or no deal? Who was he bidding against? Himself? What the hell? Keith was limited to teams in the west…Vancouver wasn’t doing it. Flames are set. Seattle? Maybe. Unreal.

This. 100x this. Here was the tweet/article:

https://nhltradetalk.com/oilers-take...-duncan-keith/
Quote:
For the Oilers, it’s about not giving up too much to acquire an older player with a high salary cap hit. Edmonton has a lot they want to do this offseason and adding Keith’s $5.38 million contract for two more seasons is problematic, even if they can technically make it work since Oscar Klefbom is unlikely to return. For the Blackhawks, they don’t want to retain salary because their plan is to go after bigger fish on the trade or free agency market.
[Seravalli] goes on to explain:
The Oilers have had discussions with the Chicago Blackhawks. First off, there’s two things in play. One, Chicago is not willing to retain any salary, And the second thing is, whatever pieces the Oilers had on the table to try and make something happen, and I believe it centred around Caleb Jones plus something else, and you can understand why Jones was part of the picture because Chicago wants to also try and bring in Seth Jones, my understanding is one or more of those pieces has since been removed.
Servalli closes with, “Edmonton has offered a take it or leave it type deal and there’s only a certain price they’re willing to pay given that Chicago isn’t willing to retain money.”
...
The biggest concern for fans is that Holland is reportedly offering multiple pieces and is willing to take on the full salary for Keith, thus dramatically overvaluing the player and misreading the market. Keith has the potential to be a useful player for the Oilers, but many will argue that adding his leadership or his experience does not equate to getting fleeced on a deal by his name had a lot of cache and he’ll one day be in the Hall of Fame.
|
So basically Holland drew his line in the sand. And then Chicago called his bluff, and Holland caved. I love it.

Am curios to see this play out. I think this might be a classic example of overvaluing veteran experience... that being said, I don't think Keith is going to be a top pairing dman for the oilers.
If he's a 4-6 dman, who wears a letter and helps shape the mentality of that room, I think it's not that bad of a deal.
If he's a 1-3 dman, then I think it could definitely be a disappointment, regardless of his intangibles. Especially when they are losing barrie's 48 its over 56 games...
Anywhoo, oilers suck, hope it blows up in their face.

There is clearly no other market for Keith here, and he is limiting where the wants to play (sounds like the only options are Seattle or Edmonton).
You aren't getting a sweetheart deal or any type of retention from Chicago.
So why do this before the Draft / Free Agency opens. Keith for a 3rd in 2022 is probably still there on August 1st if you want to do it.
|
Because the propaganda machine was hyping up Keith for almost two weeks, and Kenny had to deliver. It's how that organization rolls.

Question: was Keith any good against Edmonton in the play in in the bubble? I wonder if their opinion was skewed.

What the actual Hell?
Nobody should want to take it. Its like being offered a hand grenade. That you have to pay for.
Rational humans would say 'no!'

Peak Keith was probably about as good as 41 yo Lidstrom. And that's a compliment to both.

Now...how many games is Duncan Keith actually going to play for Edmonton? Should we start a pool for how long it takes for him to hit LTIR?
My money says he plays 5 games in that hideous sweater before he hits LTIR.

How many times has a player asked for a trade from his new team after asking for trade from his old team? Will Keith be the first?

I was wondering if anyone remembers how does a team get a negative caphit from a buyout?
I can't remember the exact conditions, for example if EDM pays Keith for a year and then buys him out. Theoretically, then EDM would have a higher caphit than salary during his stay with the team. Would a buyout result in EDM getting cap credit for a year, and CHI a penalty, followed by a year where EDM has a buyout of something like $500k?

Presumably this eliminates any possibility of Seattle taking Gio in the expansion draft and immediately flipping him to Edmonton?
