But when it's multiple top players on your team playing hurt I think that's an issue. As fans we wonder what's wrong with the team, well it's clearly injuries here.

we all agree that's a bad thing, right? just because everybody does it does *not* mean that it's a good thing
we're talking about a guy who literally had a torn pec! he's in the first year of a long contract... do you really want to put yourself in a position where you're risking his health for the final three years of that deal? the Flames may have done just that.
the Flames already chose to play an injured Noah Hanifin this season. they then saw him go out there and almost immediately injure himself even worse, ending his season. they played Monahan through a bad hip injury for months. and for what?
it all just screams recklessness to me.

The knock against Tanev has always been he gets hurt a lot. He gets hurt and rather than sit him you play him in an attempt to catch Montreal so you can sneak into the playoffs and then get your ass handed to you in 4 games? In a year with zero playoff revenue?
If a team is in the playoffs at that point, jockeying for position in the standings (home ice etc) or tied for the last spot already I get that you might want to keep him in the lineup. Oddly enough thats another discussion. But I think its pretty gross negligence if you knowingly throw an injured player out there night after night with nothing on the line especially in year 1 of a 4 year deal where age and durability will become a concern pretty quickly.

It's a hockey culture thing more than a Flames thing.

Does no one consider that Tanev has never played a full season? That was one of the main criticisms of the signing "he's never played a full season. You'll love what you get for 3/4 of the season". I would assume he takes great pride in being able to play a full season. I'm sure they asked and probably recommended that he shut it down, and he may have stubbornly said no.

See here's the problem.
The NHL has a painkiller abuse culture. Players would rather load up on opiates and anti-inflammatories so they can play rather than sit out a game.
The onus has to be on the teams to shut players down if they're not healthy if they want to fix the culture. The players are too affected by said culture to be the ones to lead the charge.

How many injuries did other teams announced once the season was done for them? I was wondering with this being a super condensed season, combined with a extremely brief training camp/preseason, that there would be a ton of injuries due to lack of rest time.
Flames have a fairly compact first half of the season too.

These are players that play a sport where someone face gets mashed up every frickin game. These players will REFUSE to play with a cage although that is rationally the smart decision to make for their long term health.
Hockey players are the last people that should be making medical decisions for themselves. But as Jiri said above, it's a hockey culture problem, and one that's likely not going away anytime soon. Only when tragic events/lawsuits occur will change come.

And he played the last 4 games, after the team was eliminated, on top of that 20+ minutes all 4 games. This organization does s**t a$$ backwards. I also really don't care if he wanted to be a warrior and be out there with his teammates, as a coaching, medical and management staff you take it out of the players hands at that point. There is NOTHING to play for.

I get that's a thing playing injured and all but with the Flames this year and being so close they should have just shut these guys down and play the young guys.
It shows what's going on in the organization a bit and that there isn't really a strong long term plan but rather win right now. Had they made the playoffs and lost the first round and even win a couple games it would have been about look at how tough our guys are.
I just don't think it's a solid plan going forward this way. I think the new/younger players should be more quickly utilized and given opportunities.

Im stunned how many people are surprised by guys playing through injuries.
It's just part of the game. Always has been.
If they cant do any more damage to themselves according to the physicians and want to play..... then they play. It's what they do.
If they can't play then they don't.

Are you really trying to make a case for Tanev playing in the final 4 meaningless games when Kylington and Valimaki were in the press box?
