Teams playing well. Generated a few high danger chances with some quality passing and quick thinking. The score isn't indicative, MTL has looked piss poor 5 on 5. Just keep playing the way we are and it will be 2-2!

They’re lucky the flames are allergic to score in first periods.
Thought we had a pretty good period, of course besides our pk

I've been a fan of Tanev for a long time, but I've seen a lot more of him recently and I think he's an absolutely incredible defender because of three things:
1) Awareness and hockey IQ. Can see the play develop 2 or 3 steps ahead.
2) Positioning and stick. ALWAYS in the right position, and furthermore his body is always in the right position to make the play he needs to.
3) Mobility/agility/skating. Not super quick, but highly agile. This is what allows him to get into the right spot.
Also, pretty tough and willing to block shots. A pretty great package as a defensive defenseman. Does everything right for his role.
Brilliant signing, IMO.

Rough result for the boys in a period where they looked decent until they took the penalty killing their flow. Tough luck for Valimaki who's had his struggles to start the year, but nothing too surprising as he's a very young player. This is why I saying some fans needed to temper their expectations of Valimaki in the offseason when some were saying they'd like to see him in the Top 4. I think he'll get there in 2 or 3 seasons but we need to be patient with him. He's done better than a lot of rookies would but needs time.

Calgary was the better team that period. Hopefully we get some make up calls. Some of you guys need to smoke some space grass and relax. Icarumba.

Yea, Valimaki is had a veeeery rough last 30 minutes of hockey going back to Marner's GWG last game, but overall the 3rd pairing has played very well with sh***y luck so that should change.
Still, might be worth it to sit Valimaki for a game or 2

Isn't that the most frustrating part? By the eye test they looked fine until two suspect calls and some bad luck tipping another puck into our own net has us in a hole once again.
At some point the bounces will even out. At least they aren't playing like trash. They can still get back in it.

The real problem was never addressed. I don’t care if the Flames come back and win this game it still doesn’t change the root of the issue of why we constantly fall behind. And just all around seem lackluster. We have too many soft floaters who play the perimeter and don’t really play to win. The rot in the core wasn’t addressed.

Man this game pisses me off.
Miss a 50-50 hook on Gaudreau
Call what should never be a penalty on Valimaki
Call a 50-50 call on Lindholm
All three reffing decisions go against the Flames, an unlucky own goal on one of those PPs, and the Flames are down 2-0 in case that wasn’t indicative of the flow of the game at all.

I thought they played well enough. MTL got 2 very helpful penalty calls. If not for those this game would be zero zero.
I still do not like those super short side shots of Johnnys. I understand the logic but it really is an extreme risk shot. The amount of times it results in a quick strike transition for the opposition greatly exceeds its value of keeping the goalie from cheating off his post.
Other than that, Valimaki if going through some growing pains. The trick is to keep deploying him and allowing him to work them out.
I thought Monahan and Gaudreau were fine. The Lindholm line is dictating the Flames pace. I dont like the Ryan line and the Bacls, Bennett pairing need to be a net positive either offensively or defensively.
I'm still really impressed with Nesterov.
He covers warts more than his warts need covering.
And he is definitely not afraid to shoot.

The difference between tonight and last game is unlike last game where they got dominated and only had 1 shot in the first period, the Flames were the clear superior team 5v5 in the opening period tonight.
This time is was the special teams that cost them.

Imagine if the Flames had traded Hanafin like some wanted. Yikes. Vali will need some seasoning for sure.

Emotionless, "going through the motion" systematic play.
Gallagher scores right on top of our goalie, and Giordano just skates away and doesn't do anything.
You want to lead and help this team get going? Clear the crease after the goal (or even better, before it). They made a pass and scored a goal within inches of the crease and had to paid absolutely no price.
This team does not play with emotion, at all. It was not a bad period, but you aren't going to win games by "not being bad".

Thing about luck is it always comes back around.
I guarantee you there will be games down the line where the bounces and iffy calls benefit us.
Lately we're just fighting a disadvantage in that department. The question is if you can pick up points when those things go against you.
