Gio is done. If they aren't going to trade him they need to severely cut back his ice time to like 15 mins a game.

I'm liking the Markstrom-Mike Smith imitation. Makes the game way more exciting! and he gets his hits in.

I think, without a doubt, Gio need to be playing bottom 4 minutes. He's 37.

Give him the Chara treatment.

Otherwise he is going to struggle mightily, and that's on the coaching staff, not on him.

Seems like management are not prepared to plan for his decline.

I don’t think there’s much more to discuss than Gaudreau and Monahan. This team goes as they go, that’s it. Bottom line.

It’s not coaching or goaltending or lines 2-4, and it’s not the D.

It’s Gaudreau and Monahan.

Not dangerous, not doing what’s needed. Drive to the net... get in front of the net... my personal favourite- GET OPEN. Specifically here are plays that need to expire from Gaudreau’s mind:

-shots from 20 feet out
-shots from 30 feet out
-slap shots from a bad angle at 20 feet out
-button hooks

Gaudreau used to be shifty. Hard to predict. Now he’s the most predictable player on the team. He also needs somebody to pass to, to support him. So if Monahan isn’t interested or can’t be in position for those passes- you have to change the outlet pass player.

Not hard. They need to break them apart, and then yes lastly, they have to care more. But they won’t and we have known this for several years so get ready for the same thing we have seen the last year and a half. These guys got paid- now they don’t have to care. The end.

I'll be patient with Lucic especially, I think it will take him a few games to get into proper game shape... I think it is a little tougher for the big guys to get their legs going.

In my opinion.

And I am a huge proponent of advanced stats.

Overreacting to the first game of the year is always a good course of action though.
And don't lump the two players together without getting into how one, Gaudreau, drags the other guy down. He turned over the puck EVERY time it was passed to him so of course his linemates are going to suffer with him.

I'm not so sure about that. We have Hanifin and Valimaki on the roster - as the season goes, their minutes will climb, Gio's will shrink.

I think they should full on jump to the finish line on it though for sure. During 5v5, we should see Hanifin-Andersson, Valimaki-Andersson Tanev, Giordano-Nesterov.

If you look at last night:

Noah Hanifin:
EV: 20:30
SH: 1:21
PP: 0:00

Mark Giordano:
EV: 14:54
SH: 3:26
PP: 1:30

Juuso Valimaki:
EV: 13:04
SH: 1:30
PP: 0:03

So during even strength, Giordano is already LHD #2. As Valimaki gains more traction, I imagine Giordano's EV time will fade a bit more. Hopefully his PK time is reduced as well (although Ward pretty openly said Giordano and Tanev will be playing PK together...)

I'd be fully on board with a Monahan for PLD swap, even if we have to throw in a pick. Change of scenery is needed for both sides

Andersson, Tanev and Hanifin played more minutes than Giordano who played less than 20.

So what are you talking about ragging on the coaching staff and saying management isnt prepared?

Might want to check the icetime stats before going on a rant.

Again, don't lump this on Monahan. A good example is the stupid bump back on the pp rush. Everyone has to stop skating at the blueline and wait for Johnny, where he proceeds to get half way across the line and passes to Monahan who is standing and waiting with a defenceman right beside him, it doesn't work. The only guy who seems to carry the puck into the zone on the pp is Backlund, who never gives a pass to a guy standing still. I would rather see Monahan playing with Mang/Dube etc., than with Johnny.

Andersson is gonna see a lot of minutes playing on two pairings....

Yeah, call me crazy but I think Monahan will improve away from Gaudreau.

Hey, we have to rely on the youth taking over the team!

Tkachuk - Lindholm - Dube
Mangiapane - Backlund - Bennett
Gaudreau - Monahan - Dube
Mangiapane - Dube - Dube

Hanifin - Andersson
Valimaki - Andersson
Hanifin - Tanev

I like this roster. They gotta get this cloning thing going ASAP!

I watched the first Edm vs Van game and I think most teams use this but I'd say Johnny is just way too far behind when the bump back happens. The Flames have to stop skating and the opposition gets a lot of time to set up and get back to the blueline.

I agree with this, in the sense that his first goal was a deliberate clean snipe.

Just dropped in and I see the sky is falling for a lot of other people here after game 1, after a short camp. Half the team doesn’t belong in the NHL, that kind of nonsense.

Look at how the Jets scored
- Laine’s first goal is because of Forbort making an outstanding play on Andersson. 9 times out of 10 that play is a problem for the Jets
- Lucic gifted them a goal.
- And Laine did a great job resetting and getting that shot in OT, but again, when Monahan interrupts the initial shot, most times the shooter doesn’t regain the handle so quickly

If that isn’t a game of bounces, I don’t know what is

Incidentally, I liked the Flames’ goals

I see it as both a bit of luck and skill.
The reality is Laine has one of the best releases in the game - so if he has a chance to get it off from a good area - it's dangerous.
What sucked was that Monahan really busted his ass to get back. And did a good job of trying to disrupt the opportunity. One of those examples of doing the right thing even though it led to a bad result.
