Treliving definitely made mistakes trying to add key pieces via free agency. Calgary will not really attract many top end free agents and he had to overpay for Neal and Brouwer was just a mistake despite being a consistent 20 goal 40pt guy.
If this team fails to win a round of the playoffs we are looking at massive moves via trade and I think we all know Johnny is likely at least one key player that will be shopped. I do think this is surely the last run this core gets to take a step forward.

Didn't even have to be Perron. Although, I will say, if he was to pass up an extra $13 million dollars or anything even close to that, it would've been very hard for me to believe.
If the Flames miss the playoffs or bow out in the 1st round again, this team should consider big changes. But I am steadfast in my belief that this team will never go anywhere with out a true #1 center. Monahan is not that and neither is Backlund. Lindholm is the closest thing to one and even then, the most success he's ever had in the NHL was as a right winger. #1 centers win Stanley Cups. It's been proven time and time again in this league.

It certainly makes a Wednesday night game against a bottom feeder that much harder to win.
With that all said though, everything that he brings to the table definitely tips the scales favorably. Thank goodness the Flames are done playing the Kings.

It wouldn’t be this way if the Flames weren’t full of mentally weak players who never have his back. Chucky is one of the few guys you win with on this team and he’s young enough to lead a new core once we do inevitably rebuild(starting this summer hopefully).

I think that's more an indictment of his teammates than it is of Tkachuk.
If they aren't going into battle with him and his play is taking them to uncomfortable terrain they can't handle, we have a soft muffin team.

When I saw the shot of Treliving last night I was thinking to myself, man he has to be thinking the same thing....

Well, kind of
With Kassian, he made some big hits, and the unhinged response to that cost the Oilers. That is the good way to go about it
But consider when he does it the wrong way. The elbow on Doughty was cheap. Not like a good hard hockey play that the team can rally around, but the Kings sure can. And they seem to have long memories

Posted in the GDT thread - this loss according to Sports Club Stats decreased the Flames playoff chances by a whopping 10.1% to 45%....

Honestly better if we miss, this team needs a top 12-14 pick more than it needs another first round loss. Especially in this deep draft coming up.

Is this actually the case though? Someone can probably do a much more comprehensive analysis but very simplistically I had a look at their results so far. If we assume that a "good" team is one that is currently in a playoff spot and a "crap" team is currently out of the playoffs they Flames have an even record. Against "good" teams they have 15 wins and 15 losses. Against "crap" teams they have 14 wins and 14 losses. Basically it looks like they are highly unpredictable and inconsistent.

I don’t disagree. But the Kings stink. The rest of the team wakes up and it’s understandably hard to get up for compared to the Kings who treated the game like their Stanley Cup.
It’s probably the same reason why teams don’t like offering bulletin board material in the press, it just gives your opposition added motivation.
