This is a really good idea. Tix are expensive enough, almost no additional cost for the NHL and it could help build the brand plus it would get some people in the door earlier to drink beer. I like it!!

Nothing highlighted the pointlessness of the overlayed extra tracking info as when during the 3 on 3, they had all 6 skaters names up in the corners with their current speeds listed. That information adds nothing and was super distracting.

Probably would be some issues with the heightened level of intoxication people get to though. By the 3rd period of a heated game, you'd have a lot of overly drunk idiots.

Pretty certain if there are people who end up in that state, coming early isn't a draw, and even so, all it means to the league/venue is those drink sales go to them instead of the other spot they were pre drinking at.

Still seems like a win for the teams/league.

I thought the Skills Comp was quite well done this year. Blues did it right having some of the all time great alumni jump in each event. Even if Hull was a drunken sailor swaying to a stiff breeze.

Sometimes I think people forget this skills Comp and ASG all together is more for kids than your true blue long time hockey fan. Critiquing it as harshly as I have read in here just sounds like Stadler and Waldorf grumping from their high perches.

Also, good on the NHL including the women's game. Support grassroots no matter what. That's exposure their game so desperately needed. Dont forget that back in hockey's fledgling early days it looked a lot like the women's game. The Women are lucky as they have a solid foundation to evolve their game faster than those before them did.

My really young niece has taken a love to the game, having her see women on a stage like the ASG this year will only spur her generation on.

I mean I personally wouldn't want to spend 5 hours either, but they could change the length of games to accommodate that. That's for the business nerds and league officials to look at, but as a concept I think its viable.

As for the alcohol, i dont see that being an issue. I'm assuming the concession workers have pro serve and should know when to cut someone off. Also if you wanna get hammered before a game and show up, theres nothing in place to stop that either.

People dont compare womens tennis to mens tennis and it's a lot slower. The top womans players couldn't beat a male high schooler. But nobody cares, just treat it differently as its own game.

I already mentioned the tennis example, but you can say the same for golf, soccer and how about all the Olympic events? Do people really watch the Olympics and complain throughout the women’s events that they are not as good as the men?

The olympic events aren't great examples because for the most part, outside of those years, those sports don't get followed.
Women's golf isn't followed nearly to the same extent as men's.
Tennis is a unique example because often the women's matches are better from a spectator POV. Sometimes the men's game is too much about power serves and strokes, where as a women's game can have better rallies and a more entertaining game.
So it really depends on each sport.
What makes is tough for hockey is that it is a game that really is entertaining because of its speed. For me women's hockey is just too slow to be entertaining.

No one's forcing it on anyone, but they sure are pushing it on everyone... They're constantly talking on the men's hockey broadcasts about how everyone should support the women's game and how great it is. If it never came up in the context of men's hockey, the conversation wouldn't be happening.

No, but again, during the olympics, the broadcaster isn't constantly lecturing the audience about how they should really be watching the women's version of the event and how it deserves everyone's support because they're just so great and so enthralling, in the most patronizing way possible. Nor do the announcers make those sorts of noises in a Federer / Djokovic match about the women's final, because in tennis, the women's game is able to stand on its own merits.

I'm pretty agnostic about the whole thing, in the abstract. If they fund a women's league with NHL money, I'll give it a fair shot to see if I enjoy it, though it's hard to imagine it being better to watch than the AHL.

What I object to is, first, the philosophical stance of entitlement that if you're the best in the world at something (whether it be women's hockey or anything else), you automatically deserve to be able to make a living wage doing that thing regardless of whether there's a market to support that. It doesn't apply for the best Monopoly player in the world, it doesn't apply for the world's best rollerblader, or Super Mario Bros. 3 player, yet for some reason, we're all just expected to nod along and agree that it applies to this particular pastime. Second, I object to the generally preachy, pat-yourself-on-the-back-for-supporting-this-cause tone that everyone takes on while talking about this subject, as if whether you give a crap about this prospective league determines whether or not you're a good person. It's grating.

Carolyn Cameron should be on the HNIC broadcast more often. Those other guys like Bob McKenzie’s son and Kyle whatever are so uptight. Almost wanting to emulate Ron McLean that they don’t have their own personality. Carolyn comes across as normal despite having to ask the silly questions required of the job.

Well women’s hockey doesn’t have hitting which I thought you’d like.

To me the Olympics are a relevant example because for the most part the comments in this thread were from people who were casual observers of women’s hockey. I just don’t see the need to repeat how the teams couldn’t beat a lower tier men’s team. We get it already and that’s not the point. And to me it was every bit as entertaining as many of the gimmicky ASG competitions. Of course it’s not as fast and exciting as the men’s game. It’s a niche event like many, many other sports. What’s wrong with that?

I honestly don’t get why you feel some of this. It’s a product that’s out there for you to consume if you would like. You’re feeling “pressure” to like it?

I think devoting 20 minutes of the skills contest to it was fine. The crowd seemed into it. If they get feedback that people were turning off their Tv’s then I’m sure it won’t be around much longer. I thought it was more entertaining than watching players walk through the crowd or the cringy interviews, but mainly because it was Canada vs the US.
