It doesn't look like they did, since Taveras signed for less than most predicted.

I would bet that the Maple Leafs offered him $11M out of the gate, and never waivered.

Taveras was never about the most money as long as he got to some reasonable (for him) threshold.

I'd be surprised if the Leafs ever really raised their offer if they were told that the Sharks were offering above $13M.

Why? Because of geography? Dubas offered a guy who wanted to play in TO market rate.

They have other young talent because they sucked

But this time, the small market problem won't be solved with a salary cap.
This has been the landscape in the NBA for years.

He did get a thanks though from GoJetsGo so he has that going for him though.

JT is a unique situation...it's not gonna be the norm. Islanders have been an absolute mess. They are playing home games in multiple rinks next season FFS.

Lol so many Leaf fans already planning the parade. Talk about putting th cart before the horse. Lets see them actually win a playoff round first.

They are already salivating about the offense, which I will readily admit is deep. But there are only so many goals to go around. JT being there probably means guys like Kadri and Marleau's production are going to drop.

And really, with that atrocious defence, it's going to be tougher than they think. Last I checked, it wasn't lack of offense that did then in last year, it was their crappy defence.

Hey, they not only wasted half his career, they made their backup goalie the GM so they could be absolutely sure it was wasted!

JVR too...now JT is better but JVR was pretty solid for the Leafs. Oh well, it will be fun cheering for them to fail. Based on what I hear it's Stanley cup/presidents throphy or bust. GL

The Leafs are definitely going to be interesting to follow for the next while. This year is probably their best chance to win the cup, as Marner and Mathews are still on entry level contacts. If I was them I'd be trading Nylander for the best defenceman they can get right now, and also probably dumping as many upcoming picks as needed to further fill out the defence and add depth.

That Horton cap hit is ugly now too. Sure its LTIR, but IR dollars aren't as useful as actual cap space. Package some picks with that and move it to a rebuilding team for anything useful and they're in good shape this year to make a run, with space at the deadline to add whatever they feel they're missing.

gotta respect JT for signing yet another sweetheart contract. he wants to win. got to admire that. its easy to make fun of teams who overspend for FA... but this is a great team friendly deal and hes a high quality star. jelly a little bit.

Wow! This has the be the first time the Leafs have attracted a local superstar in the prime of their career. I'm glad I'm not in Canada right now having to listen to Toronto media going off. They are now a legitimate cup contender but will be in a cap crunch and need to trade at least one of their young forwards.

11M per year for 7 years is a sweetheart contract?

I'm not sure this works out at the end of the day as I think it's going to cause problems with Matthews who already isn't a fan of the head coach. If Matthews isn't happy about being on the 2nd powerplay unit I can't imagine he's going to be thrilled about being the 2nd line centre which he will be as Babckock will ride Tavares. Everyone will say the right things going into training camp but I think it's a story to watch.
