I'm waiting for someone to say Frolik. Don't say Frolik.

· whose high-water mark is -4 goals
· who scores consistently in all situations
· who consistently posts higher point totals
· who is three-years younger than Ferland
...will not provide higher production on that line than Ferland, and overall throughout the lineup with whomever else he is paired?
But he has proved to be CONSISTENTLY equal to scoring goals as Micheal Ferland. Ferland proved he could score with Gaudreau and Monahan, and yet that amounted to only +4 goals over Lindholm's career high. Lindholm has been used with all sorts of players in all situations, and still has virtually matched Ferland's goal-totals over Ferland's three-year NHL career. So really, I don't see much of a drop off at all in potential goal-scoring between the two players, but Lindholm's ability to drive offence and to contribute in all areas combined with his higher overall potential does set him in a higher stratosphere.
|
I do think that Lindholm has more potential than Ferland, and clearly is better in certain parts of the game than Ferland already but I don't like the use of exaggeration in comparing the two. It suggest bias and distorts the reality of what transpired. Flames acquired potential, youth and what they hope will be salary certainty.
Lindholm is not a year in year out 15 goal scorer. In 4 years in the NHL, he scored 11 goals twice. His high water mark is 4 goals less than Ferland's most recent season, also Ferland's high water mark. Lindholm has had good linemates, and significantly more ice time and PP time than Ferland. Ferland is definitely older but quite obviously a late bloomer with consistently increasing production every year. Prior to the trade, Monahan's injuries were often cited as a reason for the team's performance down the stretch. After the trade, it does not get mentioned as a reason for Ferland's declining production during the year.
None of this is to say I prefer Ferland over Lindholm. I don't.

His name is boring. But he seems fine.
I just find it strange that our pro-scouts seem to take back seat to newest coach when finding players for this team.

I don't see signing Depth UFAs as being in opposition to acquiring top 6 talent. Why not both.

I simply have very little faith in Treliving when it comes to signing veteran UFA:s. The track record isn't great.
Plus Ryans situations ticks all the boxes for "bubble player inflating his points because of a good situation on a bad team".
So I agree it seems like a high risk - low reward signing. You're not likely to get more than what you pay for, but there's a really good chance the short stint in Carolina was an anomaly and not repeatable.
I mean, the most likely reason someone plays years without a single game in the NHL is because he's not actually very good.

It is only high risk if it is longer than a 2 year contract.

High risk in the sense that there would be absolutely nothing surprising if Ryans points in Carolina were an anomaly and not repeatable. The odds of this being a bad signing seem pretty high, the odds of it being a really good signing seem pretty low.
Plus you can only commit to so many guys before the season. Every bad signing is also a better signing you didn't make.

This reeks of the love Hartley had for Ben Street.
Then I hear or see that we have extended a QO to Hunter Shinkaruk. What are we trying to build here ? An old folks home? Jesus let’s sign Burrows and Kesler ffs.
Treliving needs to remember he’s the GM and yes he has a important relationship with his coach but come on.
Makes me wonder how many guys are going to get PTOs this year because our roster doesn’t have enough mediocrity and we need to achieve just the right level of meh.
I predict Brads days are numbered if he is going to do bad favours that don’t help this team.

At least it's Derek Ryan and not Derek Roy.

Derek Ryan puts up 38 points while being a top 10 face-off guy in the league and boasts impressive underlying numbers.
Yeah, let's rip Brad a new one!
GM identifies issues with the team, aggressively moves to fix them and...
It's almost as if some people wanted things to stay the same...so we could maintain the suckitude?

What are you even talking about?
Ben Street played 35 career games in the NHL, only 19 as a Flame. He had 2 assists
Shinkaruk is 23, and will be in the AHL
What does any of that have to do with Ryan?

Between the odd Derek Ryan disdain and people pining for Yakupov I have to ask...is CP getting dumber?
