Flames have often lit up Smith or seen him make repeated misplays with the puck in spite of being a 'good puck handling goalie'.

You get a starting goalie for $4.2M, and all we had to do is give up a college defenseman who wasn't signing with us and fall back seven picks in a weak draft.
At this point, I don't need a star goalie on this roster. I just need someone who, for 55-60 nights a year, is a no brainer to receive the starting assignment. Mike Smith is a little older. He could probably benefit from 30 games off a year - to me, that's more than enough opportunity to justify keeping Jon Gillies or Rittich as the full time backup.
I like it.
EDIT: For Hickey and a conditional 3rd, I like it even more.

Ripoff. Could have used Hickey as part a big package.

I bet the 3rd rounder is conditional on Hickey signing with the Yotes.
Great deal if true, especially with the salary retention.

Johnson headed to Arizona too, it seems. According to Aaron Ward.

Mike Smith can double up as the 4th D. Two birds one stone.

We aren't talking the ability to run the accounting department.
Concern regarding a gamble on a professional athlete with two years of a hefty contract, at an age when they historically deteriorate is just common sense.
Literally every professional contract negotiation has the player's age somehow entrenched in the conversation. Call it ageist or whatever you want, when it comes to professional athletes, age matters, and is a foundation of contract and trade decisions.

Sucks about Hickey, but he probably made it clear he'll be looking to go UFA next year, so it's not really a loss for the Flames at this point.

25% retained means Smith's effective cap hit for the Flames is $4.25 mil

I havent read through this entire thing yet, but why do people keep saying that they'd prefer to keep Elliott?
Thats insane.
First of all keeping Elliott costs a 3rd rounder, secondly we have no idea what kind of money he'd be asking for but somewhere near Mike Smith's wages or insubstantially lower are not out of the question and finally he had an entire season plus the playoffs to conclusively show his abilities and they were found substantially wanting.
Mike Smith may not be the answer, but Brian Elliott is certainly not the answer.

That's not bad. I'm assuming they are thinking smith can be a stop gap till one of our prospects is ready. I don't think smith is very good but at least it didn't cost a lot to get him.

So we effectively gave up nothing, and got Smith with 25% retained.
Hickey - seemed unlikely to sign here.
3rd - we technically traded it for Elliott.
Johnson - UFA.
That is wizardry.

Aaron Ward ✔ @NHL_AaronWard
@TSNBobMcKenzie Not official, hearing Calgary will send Johnson, Hickey and conditional pick to Arizona in the Smith deal. Salary retention unclear. #TSN
