As far as cancer goes, does it really matter all that much which type of cancer your donation goes towards? If they came up with some treatment that cured 90% of breast cancers, that same cure would no doubt be useful for other types of cancer as well.

Not really. All cancers are biologically different and require different treatments and ultimately different cures. It is a catch all name for hundreds of different diseases that happen to be abnormal cell growth. For example, if one has prostate cancer that spreads to the bones you don't have prostate and bone cancer...you have prostate cancer that requires prostate cancer treatments. In addition in a cancer arising from a single cell type will be different. Prostate cancer example again...there are something like 7 different types and just in a single type you will vary in aggressiveness from disease to disease.

That isn't to mean research can't be helpful for multiple cancers but there is no single cure to be found. Different cancers need different lines of research and different levels of funding.

My issue is that money isn't going towards research / treatments. Most of the money they raise goes towards "awareness." I think we've raised enough awareness about breast cancer. Let's start putting more money towards research.

Just look at the Moneysense charity rankings/grades guide that is published every year.

That will never happen, because funds spent on awareness count as doing charitable work in their books, but are also effective at raising additional funds.

I realize they will never stop altogether and I don't even think they should. I just think the balance is off with that particular charity.
