Maybe I'm alone in this... But I get the sense that many are using this thread for news updates (92 viewing while I type this). Any chance we can minimize the discussion?

I'm all for that, but I was responding to the page and a half of people calling this guy a scumbag for not talking to police and advocating methods of torture to extract info from him.

I think HHH was subtly telling everyone to STFU while this plays out. Feel free to get on your soapbox at a future time.

Isn't this a discussion forum though? I mean, there are tens of places you can get news from on the internet, but only one thread here to discuss the topic...Should we only post in this thread if we have a news update?

I just assumed we had a few time travelers from 2006 among us.

This "keep to news only" comment comes up a lot, and what most people generally mean is "don't have stupid internet arguments right now". At least, that's how I view it. Discussion on the topic being fine, arguing about the criminal code or torture vs no torture or these tangentially related topics perhaps being done elsewhere or left for later.

Honestly, if people want news updates, they should go to a news site rather than a discussion forum.

Or should we all just post "I hope for the best" over and over and over again even though we all know that it is likely we are merely waiting confirmation of the worst at this point?

Sure he's innocent until proven guilty. But if you have information about a little girl whose mother was murdered and:

A) you could help find her alive and well or
B) she was also killed and you did it or know who did

You're going to be tried in the court of public opinion and found guilty. Honestly if you have information and aren't cooperating at all, you have implicated yourself in my opinion.

To be fair, we don't know that this guy can help with either A or B.

(Meant as a response to Slava)

Exactly. There is an amber alert and time is of the essence. Especially when there are reports of the individual around the area and possibly interacting with them.

Seems to me the Police narrowed on him pretty quick with CCTV images and tips that came in.

Well it was stated today that they have a guy in custody who isn't cooperating at all. So if you don't know anything and have nothing to add, then how would you not cooperate? You can only be uncooperative if you have something to add and won't, right?

Honestly, if I was arrested for something I knew I didn't have any involvement in, then is likely how it'd play out:

1) I'd tell them I have no involvement
2) They'd press for more details
3) I know nothing that would help find this girl, so I'd stay silent to protect myself, just in case

Pretty easy to see how that could be labeled as "uncooperative".

This is gut wrenching that last part, with his message to his daughter.

Faulty reasoning.

You can be uncooperative if you don't know anything but people expect that you do know something.

Emotions are running high on this tragedy, but it will prudent not to get ahead of ourselves and jump to conclusions with media supplied information

Example

Guy Paul Morin was considered to be uncooperative with the detectives because he wouldn't give them the answers they were looking to confirm

He was aloof and unemotional than the usual person and that convinced them moreover that he was the killer. ("Ya... the Kid showed no emotion that the little girl died... He must know something")

They charged him with murder and he rotted in jail until newer DNA science cleared him of the crime scene

They jumped to conclusion, imprisoned the wrong guy and they never found the actual murder

So if the pro's refrain from jumping to conclusions... Maybe we should too?

What is the value of authorities stating a person is cooperative or not cooperative?
Doesn't seem helpful. Leads to assumptions not necessarily accurate.

They could be saying he's being uncooperative so that any accomplices feel safe and don't go into hiding.

The guy in custody has not even been identified. It's not like anyone's actually tarnishing someone's reputation by calling <unnamed suspect who probably abducted the girl> a scumbag for refusing to cooperate. Nobody's rounding up a posse to rip out the guy's intestines...it's just a discussion.

If <unnamed suspect who probably abducted the girl> is actually <unnamed suspect who was just in the wrong place at the wrong time>, then should we all apologize to him? Guess we'll have to have a round-up of stocky black men to receive their apologies.

Fair enough...but you know the media will be camped out by the APU to see who leaves in the next few hours...

Definite chance of someone not related to the case being tagged as "unnamed suspect who probably abducted the girl"
