There hasn't been an official confirmation that expansion will even happen at this point.
It's probably somewhat safe to say that players with less than 2 years of pro-experience will be exempt, which would make Gillies exempt, but it's far from confirmed.

Will have finished his 2nd professional season, so as far as I see it, he's not exempt.

The question is if the 7 games were enough for it to count as a professional season.

Although his entry level contract has been underway for two seasons, he has not accrued enough games in either season to count as a 'professional season'. Technically next year will be his first professional season under the CBA.
It is my understanding (and I believe this has been hinted at elsewhere by Flames brass) that he will be exempt.

Will Kylington be exempt?
I would think the most likely candidate to be "lost" at this point would by Jokipakka? maybe Bouma...or someone like Kylington, Shinkaruk, or Poirier (assuming they have to be protected and/or are not on our list)

Wait, so you're a Flames fan but you don't care how this ruling was going to work out because they would have bought out Wideman and had significant money stuck on our cap for two more seasons?
That's insane.

I actually think getting rid of Wideman to create a spot for a guy like Nakladal would benefit the team. Otherwise you have a guy who's only here for next year using up a spot on your roster. One of the biggest reasons Schlemko left was because of how many D the Flames had signed. Personally I think it would be worth the money and cap bogey to get rid of Wideman from the roster.
The Flames have been well below the cap for like 3 straight years, and I even think this year they'll still come in a ways under with Gaudreau and Monahan signed and 3 boat anchor contracts.
Admittedly though, I'm not a fan of the player. I respect what he did two years ago, but 1 out of 4 seasons he's been a good player, the other 3 he's been between lousy and average.

Givens: Monahan, Gaudreau, Bennett, Backlund, Frolik. After that it's going to be a really important season for the rest of the crew. Will Ferland finally push through and become a legit power forward prospect? Can he put up a 15-20 goal season this year? Has Shinkaruk surpassed him already if he doesn't make a major jump? Will Poirier have a breakout season? Was last seasons Colborne's peak? Does some dark horse guy like Klimchuk have a come out of nowhere season? Lots of variables there.
Gio, Brodie, Hamilton on D, no question. And I'd have to agree that Gillies (if he isn't exempt) would be the goalie prospect of the future to protect.
To further the question, who do you think is the most likely player to be drafted? I remember reading that LV has to pick at least one player from each team. But that will still leave a few teams with more than one player being picked to make Vegas have a full roster (both NHL and AHL). If Kylington isn't exempt, he's highly probable. Jokipakka will probably have some interest. Maybe Ortio if he has a bounce back year. And whoever is remaining out of Shinkaruk, Ferland, Colborne, etc. My guess, if it's 2, are Kylington and Poirier.

Expansion is a scary thing but remember they can only take 1 player from us and everyone else is losing players too, so we'll probably be alright.

It would be interesting to do the exercise to see what the expansion teams roster would look like.
It would seem that they'd have a team with decent depth as they'll be able to pick 30 legitimate mid roster caliber players. But they're going to lack top end talent. I wonder if they'll be looking to make some quantity for quality types of moves once the draft is over.

Will the expansion team really be drafting more than 30 players? I think between the expansion draft (assuming they only pick 30 players), the entry draft, free agency and trades, they should be able to get close to that 50 player limit fairly easily.
I don't think we have to fear losing two players.

Good point. Totally overlooked the draft and free agency.

I think someone should set up a mock Las Vegas this offseason just for fun.

If two of Ferland, Poirier or Shinkaruk have strong years, there's a good chance one of those guys gets picked. Or maybe that causes BT to expose Backlund or Frolik. Or maybe it's Jokipakka who is gone. Regardless, we are losing someone decent.

So much depends on the talent available on the other teams, but if I were to guess, I would say whomever ends up being our #4D (assuming it isn't Wideman): Kevin or Nak.

Wideman has been good for us but his job has been taken by Hamilton and to some extent by Nakladal. I hope we can trade him this summer and not need to buy him out but yeah his days here should be over. As said we need room the for Nakladal and Wotherspoon or whoever beats him out for a spot.
Wotherspoon will need to pass through waivers if sent down so for me the choice is Wideman or Wotherspoon.

I think there are going to be six defenseman better than Jokipakka or Nakladal available for LV to pick. The protection rules are designed in such a way that LV probably has six guys that are considered solid 3-5 guys on most teams by the time this is said and done. Jokipakka and Nakladal aren't there yet. I think the only way one of those guys goes is if Ferland, Shinkaruk and Poirier all have bad years.

We might add another UFA winger this off season that we'll want to protect....that could move a Ferland or Colborne off the list as well.

That Vegas team is going to be good. Taking the 10th best player on every team in the league leaves you with a pretty damn good roster.
