Head coaches the Oilers have gone through since the Flames hired Hartley:
Ralph Krueger
Dallas Eakins
Todd Nelson
Todd McLellan
Also throw in the time MacTavish was behind the bench after Eakins was fired.
Very comparable.

I dont know, I'm with troutman on this, killing that Country Club attitude is a big part of where we are today and Hartley was largely responsible for that.
Then you start hearing things like the players 'hated' him. I can deal with the 'not respecting' him because these players arent idiots, if they dont respect him then something is up, but 'hating' him?
Of course they did, everyone hates the boss that makes them work the hardest. That doesnt mean you get rid of him.

@DarrenDreger
With a somewhat unexpected change in Cgy, it seems more likely Utica coach, Travis Green is going to land one of the NHL jobs.
|
I doubt Dreger has any inside info or insight into this. Informed speculation, at best.

Burke was at lottery because Treliving 'was' to be overseas. But trip was delayed around time Boudreau fired. Go nuts, conspiracy theorists.
|
So, Treliving didn't fly home to fire Bob. This lines up with the thinking that he wanted to do this before he left for the World Championships. We might not get a replacement until he gets back.

Locke, is this pure speculation or is a Talking Head bringing it up.

Hartley's good year he had and AHL team with Gaudreau. That was a great year.
From a February thread " How safe is Hartley's job"

You are right, players in different stages of their careers have different needs...Calgary, as a young team likely needs more nourishment then Anaheim who is led by a number of veterans...
But the claim that Hartley had success because he could 'threaten financial ruin' over his players is ridiculous. Why did Hamilton, Gio, Brodie and Backlund (all on new financially secure contracts) have career years??
Strong premise, bad logic

Wow, where'd that firing come from?!? If Treliving didn't stick with his man in goal, the Flames might have salvaged the season, but the defence was playing so poorly to begin with and without Brodie at that. Can't blame Hartley for a rebuild season for which Treliving really didn't do much to really upgrade the team in size until the trading deadline. I'd rather see Treliving fired rather than Hartley, TBH.

Very interesting if that's truly why the trip was delayed. Also, exciting.

I'm saying, imo, we let go of a capable coach who was doing a good job, to chase something that might not materialize, another effective coach.
I saw somewhere awhile ago, that one of Edmontons biggest problems is their coaches turnover, whereas other teams that have gone through rebuilds with the same coaches are much better(obviously).
I just don't want to fall into the coach carousel cycle, like Edmonton, and I really don't understand why Hartley was let go.

Really like Bob Hartley. Loved his interviews, loved his attitude towards teaching, and whatever went on behind the scenes, he always talked a good game about respecting players and treating people properly. I definitely thought he had one more year to prove himself.
That said, the biggest problem I had with this season was what happened in January and February following the 9 game winning streak. Yes the goalies were terrible to start the year, yes the defensemen were bad to start the year. But from January on both Ramo and Ortio did a reasonable job between the pipes, Hamilton and Giordano turned in strong performances, Backlund ended up having a career year, etc. And yet the team totally floundered.
If the Flames had really just had a bad start and then played well from then on but still missed the playoffs, I would have felt pretty good about the season. But they didn't. They fell apart in the middle of the season with terrible special teams and no team play to match the career years of the individual players. When you go through the line-up, it's hard to say players had bad seasons. Many of them even had excellent seasons. And yet they finished 20 points lower in the standings. That falls one hundred percent on coaching, to me. Goaltending gets the goat horns for the first two months and definitely is the biggest weakness on the team, but team play should have been able to overcome that weakness more often than it did in the second half of the season.

For all those that are happy about this and have been calling for Hartley's head I have to admit there is a small part of me that wants to see it happen just so they can choke on it. The organization made a large mistake today.

It does when that boss isn't getting results. Two top 6 picks in three years and one unsustainable playoff run isn't exactly lighting the world on fire. I'm far from a Hartley hater or apologist but the results just weren't there to justify keeping him. This players hated him country club talk is just old Iginla era fans wringing their hands. I know, change is scary but it'll be OK. It was time to move on.

Probably Cam Newton pulling away from a fumbled ball that he most likely could have recovered near the end of the game.
The guy just didn't go all in.
