All things being equal I'd agree but Wotherspoon loses his waiver exempt status next year so I think he might get the nod before Kulak.

The Flames are shortest on RWers. Iginla would undoubtedly slot in on the first 3 lines and most likely the first 2. He would be competing against Frolik, Pribyl, and if we're lucky Laine / Puljujarvi. The Flames have a lot of D depth and could perform well without Wideman. Brodie, Giordano, and Hamilton are a very solid trio to manage big minutes and the PP.
The Avalanche need D. Adding a guy like Wideman would really help their depth. He would become their 2nd best offensive threat from the backend (after Barrie) and would chew up some hard minutes from Erik Johnson. If COL gets Radulov, they will have another winger in their mix among a great group of forwards: (MacKinnon, Duchene, Landeskog, Grigorenko, and Radulov).
Their cap hits are almost identical and both contracts end after this year. The Flames would also not be as pressured to overpay for a UFA this season to fill the top-line RW spot. I think Lucic is the only perfect fit and he's going to be expensive. Iginla could delay the process by 1 year, and if he's successful, he could sign another 1-2 year deal to finish his career out on the Flames 3rd line while they're hopefully a playoff contender.
Gaudreau - Monahan - Iginla
Ferland - Bennett - Shinkaruk/Pribyl
Colborne - Backlund - Frolik
Bouma - Stajan - Hathaway
|
Iginla just doesn’t strike me as a fit anymore on the Flames’ top line. He isn’t very dynamic or shifty at this point in his career, and I don’t know if he’d be able to keep up with Johnny’s lightning-like speeds.
As a PP specialist in the middle six, I’d agree with you.

Iginla is a $5.3m PP specialist at this point. If he had a different name, no one here would want to touch him with a 10 foot pole. A playoff team shouldn't have him in their top 6 at this point in his career IMO.
Wideman's salary needs to be deleted, not exchanged for more dead weight.

I totally agree. He doesn’t have the electricity - or pure skill - to pull a Jagr. He’s a complimentary piece at this point.
He’d fit in real well on the Kings.

It's not realistic to just dump Wideman's contract. Also, it's only 1 more season, which the Flames will most likely not be a contender in. A clean Iginla for Wideman swap would help both teams for 1 year.

I would rather buy out Wideman then trade him for Iginla honestly. The $3.5m in cap space and the vacated roster spot is worth more than what Iginla brings at this point.

I'd rather address our needs without trading for Iginla, and then target a veteran RWer if the Flames are in the mix come deadline day

Wideman has 0 trade value. Even with just a year remaining the Flames would need to eat part of his salary and offer a 6th round draft choice to get rid of him.

I think the best way we can trade Wideman is to target a trade to a team that has the most cap space so it wouldn't as much of a burden, those teams right now would be...
Projected End Of Season
Cap Total / Projected End of Season Cap Space
Winnipeg Jets $59,213,845 / $12,186,155
Arizona Coyotes $60,760,676 / $10,639,324
Buffalo Sabres $61,312,554 / $10,087,446
Carolina Hurricanes $61,329,424 / $10,070,576
Nashville Predators $62,046,501 / $9,353,499
New Jersey Devils $62,943,667 / $8,456,333
Colorado Avalanche $64,125,448 / $7,274,552
Anaheim Ducks $64,449,421 / $6,950,579
Ottawa Senators $65,055,451 / $6,344,549
If I were Brad T. I'd be looking at those teams first and even tho they have space, it still might be tough to move him.

If the Flames ate 50% of his salary, I think they could get a 2nd for him easily. $2.6m on an expiring deal for a 4/5 guy who is RH and can play the PP is actually pretty good. I agree with your assessment if the Flames are trying to shop him without retaining.

That’s your best-case scenario? Troy Brouwer as our 2RW? Pribyl on the first line? Wideman on the second pair?
What’s your worst-case?

I meant if we got matthews as the best case scenario. I think this is a pretty realistic scenario. What is your best case scenario?

I really like this roster.
Lots of size, talent/depth added to the RW, and goaltending improved at a great price.
Is Trotman an RFA?

UFA according to CapFreindly.
25 years old, at 6'3 220lbs he's pretty much a right handed Jokipakka.
