I think national Sportsnet broadcasts aren't bad.

You mean like at this year's All-Star game when they did a close up of the celebrity coach's face while Gaudreau was on a breakaway?

I think it would be silly to use the All Star Game as a defining level.

Man, I miss Ed Whalen calling the Flames games!

Growing up watching hockey in the 60's, and on I can say I enjoy todays modern Broadcasts.
While in my youth the announcers were iconic some of the broadcasts were well... thank god for the play by play. Still it was golden glorious age.

Today I can enjoy a fantastic visual feast and I don't know how many of you suffered through a Howie Meeker colour commentary but there were times when I think he was legendary in his abrasiveness.

That's what PVR's are for.

It would be interesting for someone to put a poll together of our favorite national broadcasters from best to worst - national coverage perhaps over the past decade or two? I've yet to read that poll and debate in its own thread.

Can SportsNet not afford their own playoff broadcasts? Not that I'm complaining, it's great to watch HD and actually hear the crowd. But this is hilarious

Go up two posts to 229 and read the linked article. RSN is saving money by not using all their crews and using the direct feed on some games. I'm kind of surprised the NHL is letting them get away with that but it must have been in the contract. IMO that Ducks broadcast last nigh was shameful and I hope the Preds win the series in a sweep so I don't have to hear Hayward and that other guy spend all three periods whining about all the non-calls to the Preds.

If Canadians listened to regional US feeds more often they'd love Sportsnet. While production values may vary, the US hockey market is incredibly reliant on regional viewership. Because of that the announcers are hyper partisan. They need to paint the hometown heroes in gleaming white because they need to grow the viewership locally.

Oh you're right, I was hoping there was some info on it... and there it was.

That Ducks feed is terrible

Watching playoff hockey always reminds me how much I despise Pierre McGuire - he is the worst

Because some folks never want to grow up.

I'm also ashamed I did not mention Ed Whalen.. I have always found that production value when it comes to sports broadcasting has always been superior to CBC, Sportsnet or TSN. More $$$ and a larger talent pool for broadcasters will do that.

Back when Peter Loubardias did Flames games and I tuned in on Center Ice, it honestly felt like I was listing to a high school broadcast.

Ah yes, Howie Meeker. It was Peter Puck that got me through, I think. Or was it perhaps waiting for him to come on that got me though. To long ago to be sure, but to legendary to forget.

Yikes. That's some serious coin.

They could possibly save 24 of those 5200 they spent on the rights!
