Caught this last week downtown at the Globe, part of the Ukrainian film festival.
I was almost dreading seeing it, of course there were very sad scenes but it was well balanced by the incredible people who carried out rescues. Breaking into apartments to bring water to trapped pets, eventually smashing small holes in walls just big enough for a cat to fit though, etc. Patron the dog was great, he's quite famous in Ukraine. A little terrier who works with a bomb detection team, being only 9 lbs he can run and sniff out landmines without the risk of setting them off.
Watched The Twister: Caught in the Storm on Netflix today. It's a documentary on the EF5 tornado that went through Joplin, MO back in 2011. It's a hell of a harrowing watch, with video from a bunch of different sources. If you're interested in storms and weather docs, definitely watch this one.

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.

I think stormchasing is really cool, and I respect the people that do it not as idiots but out of genuine passion.
But those people are straight out their goddamned minds.

Reminds me of a quote in the Alpinist by Alex Honnold. I don't think the genuine passion/idiotic risk aspect can be separated. But the idiot aspect is also subjective, not objective.
"If you fall and die, everybody thinks you're an idiot, risk-taker, daredevil. But if you succeed everybody celebrates you as a big hero. But the reality is that you're the same person either way!"
MAL's response to that was along the lines of: “When you’re in the mountains, with a mission, it’s like all of the superficialities of life just sort of evaporate, and you can often find yourself in a deeper state of mind, and that can stick with you for a while after a big climb. You appreciate everything so much…that you take for granted most of the time. It’s kind of funny. The actual achievement doesn’t really change your life, like you think it might, but what you’re left with is the journey that got you to that point.”
Gah, I need to watch the Alpinist again.

Sounds like I need to as well.
But much as I shant be chasing any tornadoes nor shall I be climbing any mountains until we invent those rocket boots that Spock had in Star Trek V.

And its one of those Documentaries that just kind of kills me. Interviews with experts and employees, etc. and everyone just knew this was a disaster waiting to happen.
Summary: Rich idiot with an ego who wouldnt listen to anyone.
I remember first hearing about this when it happened and the first thought that crossed my mind was:
"Carbon fiber is not a good substance to make a submarine hull out of, especially not at those depths."
And lo and behold what does everyone else say? Something along the lines of: "Carbon fiber is not a good substance to make a submarine hull out of, especially not at those depths."
Who would have thought? Other than everybody?
One part I found really interesting is that the host of 'Expedition Unknown' Josh Gates went on a trip and was going to make an episode about it but actually had to convince his network not to do it because he felt it was going to be a disaster.
