Jooris was an absolute monster last night. I could have not been more impressed with him defensively.
It seemed like whenever he was on the ice he was doing something smart.

Really? I thought he skated around a lot and threw the body a bit but the offense seemed to die on his stick.

Obviously you watched a different game polak. Sorry, split was right. Jooris played extremely well last night.

Not only that but Hartley had him on the ice in the dying seconds. Jooris made 2 fine plays to kill the final 30 seconds. He doesn't have to score to be effective. He has to win board battles and out-skate opponents. He did that in spades last night.

Honestly, for me the most noticeably improved player ('visually' for what that's worth) was Ferland.
Good chances, good hustle, finishing checks. He actually looked dangerous. Which IMO he hadn't looked up to that point all year.

I think Ferland has looked good most of the season so far... But last night he looked even better. I honestly believe he would be a great fit on the top line with gaudreau and Monahan. Just needs time to gain chemistry. Can't put him there for two shifts and mix it up. Needs to be on there for a few games.

He also had Mason Raymond out in the dying seconds.
I agree he doesn't have to score to be effective... unless you put him on the top scoring line with Monahan and Gaudreau like Hartley did. I don't think it's a coincidence that they had a pretty quiet night.
Not saying he played bad but he definitely shouldn't be on that top line. Unfortunately we're kinda hooped for now.

So, no one 'stood up' and straight up fought Benn.....but after the Iggy-Benn tussle a few years back, and Benn arguably winning that fight....that may have been wise.
|
Stajan was chasing Benn up and down the ice after the hit chirping him. But unless Stajan pulled a Bertuzzi Benn wasn't going to fight.
In this day and age. The best way to get back at a team after a hit like that is to send a guy like Ferland out with the orders of pounding someone, or running someone through the boards and out the other side.

I think Ferland responded the right way to Benn's hit by laying out Klingberg a couple shifts later.

Benn's hits on Brodie were nothing compared to no one fighting James Neal after the headshot on Gio

They won both games. The best retaliation is to beat them. Taking stupid penalties doesn't help.
Nice to see Ferland throw some big hits after as well.

The Ferland - Stajan - Colborne line was fantastic. And they were out a fair bit against Benn and company. Great game from them.
Raymond had a good game.
I thought Jooris played well considering how long it's been since he played, but he shouldn't be on the top line.
Ferland deserves a shot on the top line.

Jones was doing fine with the top line until he had to leave a couple games ago. Since then he hasn't been as good. I wonder if it was a little worse than reported.
I like the conceptual idea of Ferland on the top line, but so far it hasn't been warranted based on his play. Mind you, I can see how a bunch of guys could both contribute and benefit from being on the Gaudreau/Monahan line, from Colborne to Raymond to Granlund.

Did Jooris warrant it?
Sometimes you just have to give a guy a chance
