Good. I'm glad the Sven experiment is over. Sorry, but I'm glad to see him move on.
Hilarious that this trade would break CP. I don't think this even happened when Iggy was dealt.

I am curious if there is something following this trade. I mean the waiver status next season makes sense to move him but I feel like this trade is only a part of a bigger picture. But like I said earlier, 3 second round picks in this years draft (hopefully) is a small blessing with the players lingering around in the 2nd round.

This stings because of the promise he once showed, because it's our most bitter rival and because there is a slim chance that he really turns it around and burns us for years to come. The odds of the latter scenario playing out are incredibly long.
This is good asset management -- something that Flames fans have pined for for years. We used to let contracts expire for nothing. We used to burn draft choices for veteran depth and then recoup worse picks by trading down in the draft. This represents a complete reversal: sober, analytical thinking. You get consecutively less value for Baerschi with each passing day. He's not going to play on this team, get what you can and move on. Sucks it's Vancouver though -- no way around that.

Well now I'm in the horrible position of hoping for the absolute worst to a guy that the Flames drafted and I like..
Hope you never crack the Canucks Sven! ( we still love you)

Value diminishes.
Baertschi was either going to make the team between now and October, or we'd lose him for nothing. We've also had a bunch of other winger prospects pass him, so the writing was on the wall.

Yeah, I was coming around to the same thinking.
Still pissed that it is Vancouver. If he busts out, we get to laugh. If he turns into Neiderreiter, I would rather he did it somewhere else.

I wasn't against trading Sven, because at the end of the day I think he needed to get another chance in a different organization to succeed, I'm just not crazy about the return or where he went. Ideally I would've looked to trade him for another prospect in a similar situation...ie, a once highly touted (ideally a Dman) who just needed a fresh start, or as part of a package to get someone of higher caliber. A 2nd from one of our biggest rivals just doesn't feel like enough of a return to take this risk to me.
I just hope this is not our Niederreiter...or worse, Forsberg. The fact that he went to Vancouver just magnifies the PR risk 10x fold.

Just had a friend who's a canucks fan text me the following...
"Hope this turns into Naslund for Alex Stojanov. Naslund was given up by Pits at 23 too."

Value was fair, but the fact it was to Vancouver is what sours me on the deal. It just makes me uncomfortable. I can't even wish him luck now. Should I feel bad?

With Sven, I was willing to wait. The kid got oversold by one GM and pounded down by another GM. I was hoping that with some time down in Adirondack that he'd start to figure things out.
It is easy and tempting to point out a player's weaknesses once they've been traded and say how happy that we are to see him gone...but I do wish him well and hope he climbs his way back into the NHL.

Pretty "meh" about the trade and Baertschi in general at this point.
His development appeared to have stalled and he'd fallen pretty fast and pretty far down the depth chart, in favour of many other forwards who are now regulars or are right on the cusp. Factor in at least Bennett joining in that mix next season, along with whoever else might have developed further, and it was only going to get harder for him to crack the lineup.
You also have to wonder how much more developing he could really do with us, given he's been with us a few years now and where he was on the depth chart. Also the rumoured shaky relationship with him and the organization (don't know how much stock I'd put into those but they were there none the less).
Not that dissapointed with a 2nd round pick in a deep draft, considering Baertschi was still a pretty big question mark for us.

As the emotional cloud fades, I'm becoming ok with it. I really hate that it's the Canucks, but otherwise I'm OK. Mostly because there's more in the cupboards now

I guess it staggers the choices going forward but I guess that rules out bundling the pick if it's not this year.

With seeing what Buffalo got for Stewart, 2017 2nd and they had to keep half his salary, getting a second for Sven in 2015, a guy who hasn't done anything in the NHL seems fair given the market.

I see Sven is going to have to compete with Virtanen and Shinkaruk on the left side.
Good luck, kid!

Everyone thinking we got fleeced needs to realistically look at Sven's body of work and take off the rose colored glasses brought on with one single good stretch of games years ago

At the end of the day Sven didn't fit in here.
He was his own worst enemy in terms of what he did on the farm, where he couldn't find the consistancy to prove that he was an NHL player.
I don't think that anyone believes that Sven could transition over to the Right wing which is the biggest hole in the Flames prospect pool. With his waiver status changing next season, and with Gaudreau and Poirier surpassing him on the left side, this move isn't a surprise, the timing is.
I doubt that he was going to get more then a second, unless he was packaged with something significant.
I wish him nothing but the best, he was the first prospect in a long time that was worth getting excited about. But at the end of the day he just wasn't a fit here and Treliving ended the experiment and sent him somewhere where he can fit better into a teams depth chart.

I thought for sure the Flames could turn one of these forward prospects into something that fills an organizational need like a young D in a similar situation.
Why not wait until the off-season? What if Sven had a great play-offs?
I thought Sven had improved and was starting to put up points in the A.
But but but.....
*shakes head*
On the bright side, if the return is a 2nd in 2015, there are lots of really good D prospects in this draft apparently.

The Flames got a 2nd for a washed out prospect that couldn't deliver at the NHL level...well done, I'm happy.
