The fact that the NHL has not actually mentioned he's part of the game, makes me think it's not just a short joke.

(Yes I know the ASG is almost like resting).

I'd be very surprised if that was the case -- an opportunity to play with the best of the best could only help a guy like Gaudreau who could get there someday.
Plus, the added PR of having him on a national stage. The guy could be a marketing goldmine for the Flames.

I don't know if the NHL realized just how popular Johnny Gaudreau is with American fans. They're going to kill their numbers of viewers with this one.

The All-Star game was already a bit of a joke, now it's full blown stand up routine.

If your main goal is just to make money, yes, but that is not the main goal of the team right now. It is to make playoffs this year.
The Flames have been very concerned about how he is handling a full 82 game schedule and proper rest when it comes to Gaudreau.

They aren't allowed to do that anyway, it would get him suspended.

LRT: What if Gaudreau is going and they actually said they're playing "one short forward"?

I don't think it's going to change much of anything.
That being said, if Forsberg can replace Malkin, why can't JH replace Crosby? The whole thing is just strange.

That's actually a rather good idea.

I love how everyone is blaming the NHL, when it's no one's fault but Sportsnet's own Chris Johnston.

Man this is sooooo lame, I just don't know where I'm gonna get to see this kids skills at all now.
I just wish there was some sort of service or device where I could watch him play around 82 times this year.
Maybe it would be better if they were real games and not scrimmages!
Omg and instead of having captains pick the teams we could have organizations with managers constructing them through a draft of some sort!
Seriously you guys are getting upset about the all star game?

So Gaudreau is effectively a healthy scratch for Sunday. Something isn't adding up here.

I'm blaming the NHL because they would rather go 1 forward short than to dress the obvious choice. What rationale can they possibly have to do this? Especially when they already replaced two with rookies.

Would they be allowed to do that though?
Players invited can't turn it down unless they are injured and missing either the game before or after

Johnston definitely jumped the gun, but why play with one roster a player short? They don't have to, they choose to. Not sure why. Why not keep Forsberg out and keep the rosters even?
