I agree, I think Russell has been very good. The problem was that Wideman struggled early in the season ... now that he's picked it up, we have a solid top 4. The "trade Wideman" posters always seem to forget that neither Smid nor Engelland can play that spot on the 2nd pairing very well and that it'd be too early for Wotherspoon to play that role already. Having Wideman in the lineup as #4 and logging big minutes this season is very important IMO.

Plus player...top 20 in D-man assists...top 30 in D-man points...and moves the puck OK

There was also a nice little feature about Russell on the broadcast last night.

I for one am actually pretty impressed by how Sportsnet has handled their new NHL contract so far. Hometown Hockey is a beauty.

Habs are MUCH worse than their record shows. Therrien needs to make some adjustments. Price is the only reason they're winning games. Bourque needs to go away, they need to get guys like Bournival in the lineup, he can skate, he'll inject some more energy into the lineup. Subban needs to make better decisions (and get his skates sharpened apparently) Pacioretty needs to step up, etc. Full marks to the Flames, they should have had 4 points against Montreal.

Even after all of that, the Canadiens still suck.

Our top pairing of Giordano/Brodie is costing us less than our bottom 6 in Smid/Engelland.

I've been very impressed with Russell ever since he joined the flames. Playing like a legit top four defenceman. A great puck-moving defenceman as well as strong in his own end. Wideman has really stepped up as well since his healthy scratch.

Hiller keeping the net for the Washington game on Tuesday - tweeted by Derek Wills after practice this morning. Not a surprise really as long as he is winning.

It is an amazingly touching story .
My son walked into the room when it came on and watched with me , even a 15 yr old was touched by it. I was speechless throughout it.

The team is beyond comfortable playing in front of Hiller. Don't take that as a slight on Ramo but Hiller is in the teams head at the moment. I'm glad they're rolling with him for now.

You'd have to rank Doughty, Pietrangelo, and Karlsson ahead of him. After that I suppose Carlson and perhaps Voynov are debatable, but it's pretty amazing that in a draft stacked with dmen Brodie is among the best.

In the top 10, easily. Maybe just outside the top 5.

Yup. Rämö has been good, but Hiller has been among the best in the league, and that's just the competition in this team right now

Just saw the score power rankings. #27. Comment: Gaudreau is a smooth skater, but Jonas Hiller not so much... (And a video of his misstep).
FOR REAL!! FROM A 6-2 WIN WHEN HIS GAA ROSE TO 1.82.
U people thought tsn was bad?
Edit: also Brodano combined still make more than 1m less than Subban next year. Just saying!

The Score is a joke if they honestly think a 7-4-2 team, with a positive goal differential, is 27th in power ranking. Most others have us in the 15-20 range.

Voynov has a much more powerful backhand than Brodie.
Too soon?

Thomas Drance (The writer of those power rankings) has stated many times that his power rankings are just a subjective ranking of where he see's teams ending up. He uses them to make 30 jokes every week. He is a big proponent of advanced stats and thinks the Flames successes right now are just a house of cards.
I agree, we are definitely not as good as our record has shown, but c'mon, how the hell does he have Arizona so high? Personally I thought they would end up last in the West, and they've shown nothing to prove that wrong so far. Having 8 teams below them makes no sense to me.
