Have people even bothered to take a look at his stats? He played well over 12 minutes on most nights last season. He was more than a 6/7 guy last year (when healthy). I think he's a bit better than some of you are making him out to be.

Exactly the type of signing the Flames needed. Smid was the only tough defencemen out there, now there is two.
Flames are going to be incredibly difficult to play against.
As for the money and terms - sure, it is a little on the high side. That is hard to deny. However, the Flames needed to make the floor, and term is perfect. I didn't want to see any term being given out by the Flames that passed 3 years. This will not be an anchor contract in those 3 years, so great! Tougher, another great guy in the room, and helps get to the floor. Don't see a problem with it.

Because he takes up a roster spot maybe?
I'm done arguing with you anyway.

It is 2.9 million dollars for a team that should be nowhere near the cap over the length of the deal. Why would they ever have to buy him out?
Especially when Wideman will be making 5.5 over that same time period.
|
The same reason SOB was bought out, even though he was only to be paid 2.2M this season. Bigger contracts lead to bigger expectations(both from the team and the player) which lead to bigger disappointments when a player doesn't deliver. The moment he starts being a healthy scratch, it will be very difficult to keep him as an overpaid 7th D, and its a slippery road to the minors and a buyout from there.

Engelland's a tough customer. He's fought and done well against guys like Lucic, Westgarth, Orr and Thorburn. Likely brought in to do what O'Brien was supposed to.

Interesting acquisition, I never followed him so he gets a clean slate with me. I'll reserve my judgement on him until I see 20 or so games form him.

Hopefully Sieloff will be ready to step in when this contract is over. Good replacement for him.

Why do we care what we paid? The real question is did you want the player? That's all that really matters. This move will not affect our ability to sign other players since we re not a cap team. By the time we are again the contract will be up or the cap will be about 74 million. Therefore, all that really matters then is whether or not you like the addition. Personally, I like it so I don't care if we overpaid or not. It isn't my money.

But we do need to add some physical toughness to our blue line. Eggeland is a stop-gap. The money isn't going to screw our efforts to build the team over the next three years, and it isn't my money. So big, fat, hairy, deal.
Good to see you're still crying over and over and over and over and over and over and over again about everything.

For me the money is of no significance to our 27th placed team. The term is probably 1 year longer than I'd like but nothing that will derail the rebuild or where it will be at that point.

At the end of the this wont or break the team or a few years from now.
But I just think we can all call not moving cammaleri at the deadline a flat out stupid move, even we only got a non first round pick back. The justificTion was that they didn't want to set precedence on losing trades. Not sure that even makes sense but curious why management doesn't feel the same when negotiating contracts. Particularly on low depth chart guys.

Yeah last year Bieksa picked the weakest guy on the ice in Smid and Smid did ok. I don't know if he would go with DE.

Nothing, so if that's all you're focused on then you're happy and that's fine. I'm not really big on giving a 32 year old bottom pairing guy a 6 fold pay increase "cuz size"
