They're probably still the favourites, but they'll be missing a lot of good players because of the stupid U23 team so who knows.

Has anyone done a mock up of what the U23 team will look like?

Youthful energy and skill can beat experienced players that maybe aren't taking it seriously in a tournament.

He should be but I'm wary of calling anyone a lock, even McDavid. That center ice position is friggin stacked.

Hoping Monahan and Hamilton make it for the Flames. Anyone know the Birthday cutoff? Gaudreau turns 23 August 13th, he should make this or the Americans.

I can see Craig MacTavish as the assistant GM already.

Does Craig even have an official title in Edmonton anymore? I thought he was just Chiarelli's "number two"?

Am I the only one excited to see what this U23 team will look like? It could be pretty fun to watch.

Realistically, how many players who will be on the Young Stars team would have made Team Canada anyway?

MacKinnon? Maybe.

McDavid? Not unless he has a Crosby-esque rookie year.

Bennett, Monahan, RNH? Possibly, but not likely. Most of the Olympic roster will return (and Stamkos will also be available), so who would any of the young guys replace?

On Defence, Ekblad and Hamilton will probably quarterback the Young Stars D. On Team Canada, they might make it as the 7th or 8th men.

Add in guys like Gaudreau and Jones from the Americans, and the Young Stars should be a pretty good team to watch.

Their biggest weakness will be goaltending. I assume Gibson has the starter role locked up by default. Subban could be the backup. With a strong season in Stockton, Gillies could even get consideration as the Young Stars third stringer.

In Spector's story on Sportsnet about Chia getting the job, he says it will be September 15, 1992.

That will put Gaudreau and Hamilton on the Young Stars.

Nope, not me.

I would rather it was country on country. I can't stand the idea of a U23 team.

Using the September 15, 1992 cutoff for the Young Stars team, here are all the players who played at least one game in the NHL last season in that age group (sorted by points scored last season)...

  3. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins
  4. Jonathan Huberdeau
  5. Brandon Saad

Aren't European players eligible for the U23 team?

Goal will be a gong-show for that team.

Nope. Just North Americans.

Goaltending will definitely be their Achilles' Heel.

With only players who've played an NHL game you're excluding McWhatshisname and Eichel

Yes, obviously. Also, any players who didn't play an NHL game last season from earlier drafts.

If Hamilton, Monahan, Bennett and Johnny are all on that team then I'm 100% pulling for U23 in the tournament.

I'm not crazy about the idea of a u23 team, but it is pretty sweet to see so many flames on those lists!

I think Couturier has the 3rd/4th line shut down C spot locked up.

Hellebuyck is eligible, so it's probably between him and Gibson for the starting job.

It's crazy that he's eligible. It feels like he's been in the league forever. Plus he looks like Brent Burns, so it's easy to forget he's only 22.

Spoiler!
