Cundari basically has absolute minimal value, so it's really Glencross and a third round pick for the first overall selection in a top heavy draft class. Personally, I don't think that is near enough value for that pick.

I too am puzzled why Florida wouldn't draft the fully-bearded, NHL ready, 18 year old defenseman...a player they definitely need going forward. Unless they think they can get someone equal in value and already established at that position.
Also, I think the Panthers might ask for Eberle, and I wouldn't be too surprised to see the Oilers make that move. Ekblad also fits into Edmonton's plans, and from what I've heard through the grapevine the Oilers are only looking to part with Yakupov, Eberle, and Gagne on the front end, with only Eberle drawing the kind of big-ticket interest that could truly alter the hockey landscape up north.

I'm perfectly happy watching Calgary stand-pat and take one of the 5 real top-end talents in this draft...hopefully Bennett or Ekblad if they drop. Rumor has it Edmonton is high on Draistl and Reinhart seems a natural fit in Buffalo, so either of those two aforementioned players seem like a real possibility.

Big news for the flames. I'm thinking this has more to do with moving from 4th to 1st, a lot of the talk has been about trying to get 1st while keeping 4th. But given burke's experience dealing on draft day to get his man, i'm once again toying with the idea of ekblad.
We knew burke would be interested if he's sold on ekblad and now tallon has done him the favour of dangling the pick.
If tallon can't get a big name for the pick, i'll be watching for a trade draft day.
what will it take to move up?
how about
hudler salary retained + 4th overall + 54th overall
for 1st overall + 32nd overall
i love me some hudler but he would help florida right now and the flames move up fairly significantly at the draft.

Devils advocate, but do you swap FLA's #1 for our 2015 #1? I know "McDavid/generational player/yadayadayada" but even if we are 30th next year we only have a 25% shot at him. Not sure FLA would trade a guaranteed #1 pick for a potential #1 pick, but it is supposed to be a deeper draft. Might have to throw in a 2nd round sweetener. Basically Treliving would be going all in this draft but with 2 top 4 picks, progession (hopefully) of Monahan, Gaudreau, Baerstchi, Brodie, Ramo etc. that pick might not be top 5. Do you do it?

From the Flames perspective, no. Not even sure if Florida does that swap.

That horse was beaten to death in another thread already, don't go there trust me. I suggested the same thing and had the full wrath of CP and even some Jets fans (WTH cares what Jets fans think though).

Next draft will have 3 generational talents.
Flames will most likely be one of the bottom 3, almost 100% chance.
Removing Cammy from roster will help to achieve that.
So, trading our top pick for a d-man who is nowhere close in talent to even Jones is a bad, bad idea.

I refute your proclamation that the Flames will be %100 in the bottom three of the standings. Too many teams will be fighting and tanking or rebuilding next year in a very convenient fashion.
Carolina, Edmonton, Buffalo, Nashville and Vancouver at this point can all be considered strong candidates for worst of the bunch honors. And that's just looking at teams right now before the playoffs are even over.
I don't think the Flames will even be picking top five next draft.

I'm betting that if 3 teams are actively shopping top 5 picks this year (fla, edm, NYI), at least 1 team will devalue them (NYI, edm).

Actually you did not refute anything, you just made a statement simillar to mine.
Van will not be in the running because they will not want to burn a year with twins and their fan base needs to buy tickets.
Our competition will still come from Florida, Sabres, Nash.
Oil is addicted to picks so they may sac the year.
Connie thinks we may be worse.
Gio will be hard press to repeat.
Any kid we promote will be worse in his 1st year than Stempniak.
We were lucky thats all.
Hard working and entertaining but lucky.

We most likely will be. Vancouver will likely hover where they were this year, or be a little better. Nashville should be about the same. Buffalo will absolutely be worse than us, and so will Carolina if this rumoured sell off happens. Edmonton should improve, but still be in 5-8 territory.
We had a lot of good will and hard work along with a career year from our top D-man. We're losing our top scorer, there will be more youth in the lineup. Plus the weight of some expectation. Next year is shaping up to be a step "backwards".

All but one of the players drafted ahead of him are closer to being NHL regulars than he is except for #11 pick Duncan Siemens.
2nd round picks Boone Jenner, Saad, Nieto, Jurco would be ahead of him and even the Flames Granlund might be ahead of Baertschi.
Out of the the 2011 draft class he would be a late 1st rounder.
|
Not as sure of that as you are. Baertschi is 18th in games played out of his draft class, and 14th in points. His 0.47 points per game is pretty respectable. Getting sent back to Abbotsford to work on his two way game looks more like good development of a young player than lack of capability. His NHL stats were better than Granlund, though the sample sizes are small.
Either way, talk of Baertschi is a tangent to the original discussion, so not a major point.

I sort of agree on this. The bloom is off the rose a bit, but there isn't a team in the league that would not take a flier on Sven Baertschi. He's highly skilled and has shown he can produce in the NHL. The Flames are trying to make him a complete player, which all of the top teams in the league would do with their own players. The combination of both offense and some level of defensive responsibility would make him a dynamite player. The only question is how long does it take to achieve that state, and is he a good fit in your organization.
Quote:
That said I still get the feeling he may be traded in the offseason.
|
I do agree with this. The Flames are very heavy on the left side and weak on the right. I could see the Flames going after a top end prospect on the right side or on the blueline and use Baertschi as trade bait. It is not a matter of Baertschi being worth less than what he once was, its a matter of having to give to get. Baertschi is a very good bargaining chip to use which could expedite the rebuild by bringing in a player of quality at another needed position.

If the Flames are sold on Ekblad, and have a feeling one of Bennett or Reinhart is going to fall to them, then yes, I think they make that deal. There is no guarantee that the Flames will be in the running for the 1st pick overall next year. With Florida, Buffalo, Edmonton, the Islanders, Carolina, and Vancouver in the mix, there are going to be some bad teams that the Flames would have to work to out suck. The club has said that you build down the middle. If they could get Ekblad and Reinhart/Bennett, that is one helluva start of a solid build down the middle. Our centers depth would be substantial, and the blueline would have a massive kickstart to respectability. They manage to grab a couple of other good defenders in the Wortherspoon quality range in this draft, and the club is looking pretty damn good going forward. That would be a pretty good position going forward.

If Baertschi is a top end prospect, every team in the NHL has 3-5 top end prospects. In which case we'll need to come up with a new term for the 15-20 top prospects in the league. Ultra-elite prospects?

He's still ranked in the top fifty as of the end of March, so no, 29 other teams don't have 3-5 of him. As for him being a top prospect, that all depends on your own personal definition of what that is.
