I live in a newly constructed home (in an older neighborhood), and while I prefer the layouts of new homes, I actually think a lot of the stuff that was built 20-30-40 years ago is of much better quality, even if it's out-dated. I find a lot of the finishings in new homes to be absolute crap that falls apart in months. My parents solid oak kitchen from the early 90s looks dated as hell now, but the quality of the product itself feels much better than what I have, or pretty much anything I've seen in any "luxury" home or condo. It always makes me wonder what the quality of the foundation/structure is like.

Lots of issues with new homes and also lots of issues with old homes. In both cases, the real kick in the nuts is when something major (and not sexy) goes to hell. I'm talking about things like your roof, entire plumbing system, foundation etc. With new homes, these problems are rarer and covered by the warranty however.

My house isn't the oldest on the block but at 65 years I certainly understand the appeal of a new house. Small awkward rooms, single pane windows, uninsulated walls, cracked cast iron plumbing, crumbling ungrounded circuits, 44 layers of paint, etc. can give you a bit headache sometimes...
Not quite as bad as the dreaded being stuck in traffic headache though!

Ditto. Seems like the new builds have a veneer of "high quality" applied to rather cheap construction. Cabinets are a great example of this, walk into a new home and the first impression is "wow, this looks great" but as soon as you pull open a cupboard or drawer it becomes apparent that it's surface level only. Lightweight particle board doors with a decent enough finish applied.

I only post after finishing a Car2Go trip. The smug sense of self satisfaction I'm filled with afterwards helps me with my quizzical quips.

I'm not handy at all, so I didn't want to be paying someone to constantly fix an old house.
In order to save a decent down payment, we endured all kinds of crappy old apartments and duplexes. We really wanted to build brand new (10 years ago now) and customized our current house from the ground up.
Plus the new home warranty is a bonus (for non handy people).

I've always done new houses for strictly cosmetic and convenience reasons - the ultimate consumer it would seem. I like new finishes over brass, maple, lino etc. I am not handy, I have no interest in becoming handy nor do I want to manage a general contractor. I understand there are quality differences but if you are not handy then ignorance is bliss - anything major you have new home warranty for.

My face is a bum!

The big thing for me is trees.
Unless it's a new house in an established neighborhood, no thanks. You can't buy giant trees, but you can buy modern plumbing/electrical/windows/furnaces. You pay out the butt, but at least it's possible.

This isn't a personal comment aimed at you but in general this makes sense with our "throwaway society" now. Why fix something old - it's too hard. Just buy new!
New Home Warranty? Bwahahahahhahahah! Clearly you have not tried to claim anything under NHW... blood from a stone.....

Is the other 7-11, one block east on YVB, going to be closing now?

Strangely I don't think so.

As someone who works with a lot of builders this is so true. 90% of builders these days go for the cheapest quality. We just finished a house and I honestly was about to tell the homeowner to back out if he still could because of how many shortcuts were taken on his house. I felt bad but didn't want to get inbetween the owner and the builder.
Of all the builders I've worked with Landmark homes would be the only builder I'd use if I was building a home. They're the only builder who takes pride in their work. The quality and workmanship blows compared to 20-40 years ago.

The Alberta Summer Games are this weekend in Airdrie, I went over to Nose Creek Pond today to see what they were doing in the brown slough water and it turns out that's where they are holding the canoe/kayak events. gross
