Luongo told me on Saturday at the Canucks family skate that he wouldn't be playing on Sunday at BC Place. He seemed absolutely defeated.

I'm really happy for Luongo. Dude deserves this. I don't think anyone can criticize how he handled the last 2 years. The Canucks, on the other hand...

This would be $795k against the cap. Pretty insignificant with the cap going up even just for next year, and less so going forward.

Whether the deal is good or bad really depends on your context. Schneider and Luongo for Horvat, Markstrom and Matthias is terrible as of the beginning of last season. Not keeping Schneider was an absurd mistake (depending who Horvat becomes of course).

But as of today? Surprisingly good looking trade made by Gillis. I'm surprised he got anything of value at all, much less a good (if no longer blue chip) prospect and an NHL quality player.
No matter how you want to spin it, it's actually very bad. Markstrom is far from even being a NHL backup at this point. Mathias is a 3rd line center at best so far in his career. On top of it who knows if Horvat will ever amount to jack squat!

You are probably bottoming out whether you choose to believe it or not.
I disagree on the prospects base, I think both are average/below-average

neither are great

but for the NHL depth going forward it completely depends on what Gillis gets for Kesler and/or Edler

Canucks will have one.
We all know that the Flames waited too late but the Canucks are going to find out once you fall out of the playoffs there is no guarantee that you get back quickly. We can't see the future but it's not out of the realm of possibility the Flames rebuild will make the playoffs before the Canucks rebuild.

He definitely should have gotten the start in that game. Glad he's out of that trainwreck of a franchise.

HF has the Flames at 10th and THN has us moving up as well. Please don't argue the Canucks is better.

Have the Canucks started the rebuild or traded a guy who asked for a trade?

Trying hard to fit this into your narrative. All teams are dragged kicking and screaming into a rebuild, not just the Flames.

If I looked at it right if Loungo walks away in 2018 the Canucks are on the hook for over 2 million dollars

The organization and the fans are pretty much to blame. The fans turned on Luongo some time ago, and the organization never properly stood up for him.

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
VAN is taking back money on Luongo's contract. It varies in amounts each year. Around $1M (ballpark) for each of first four years.

hmm I thought you couldn't vary the retained percentage

My favorite part of all of this Canuck drama is going to be the Van fan base reaction next time they play in the dome.

Hahaha

I dont think they are better, I think Flames are 10-15 and Canucks are probably 15-18ish

neither are something you write home about

I don't think it's particularly bad trade fore Vancouver. Given his contract they were never going to get much for him. However, the way that franchise handled the situation over the past year is embarrassing.

Hence the reason why he didn't get to play in the Heritage Classic

I don't understand this deal from FLA's perspective.

Why trade for an aging goalie? Do they think the will be contenders in the next 3 years? They've got some pieces in Barkov and Huberdeau, but they will be a few more years.
